Farnay is a common French, located in the department of the the Loire and the area the Rhone-Alps.
Geography
Farnay dominates the valley of Gier over one of the first buttresses of the
Pilat between the valley of the
Gier and the valley of Egarande.
The Commune is located at 24 km of Saint-Etienne and at 35 km of Lyon.
History
Etymology: Farnai (
1173), of Farrouacum, the name of Latin man Farro + suffix - acum.
Existence as of 12th.
1173 Jarez and the valley of the
Gier pass under the domination of the Archbishop of Lyon, yielded by the Counts of Drill.
In
1691, the inhabitants build, with their expenses, a house with their vicar; it will become only in
1731, its main home. A picturesque quarrel of bell-towers was followed from there which found its conclusion only in
1790, when the administration detached Farnay of Saint-Paul.
In 1847, the administration removes with the commune part of its territory (the hamlet of the Recluse) with the communes Genilac; Bank-with-Gier; Saint-Paul-in-Jarez; to create the new commune of Lorette (loss of 594 inhabitants).
