Farallon Islands

The islands Farallon ( Farallon Islands in English) are in California forty kilometers off the town of San Francisco.

On the whole these 0,854 km ² shelter the largest colony of birds of the the United States except Alaska and Hawaii. Formerly exploited for the skins of Otary S and eggs of birds, a Headlight and a Radio station were installed there. These islands are now protected as a Farallon National Wildlife and Wilderness Refuge .

History

The Amerindian were to probably know the existence of these islands well before the arrival of the Européen S, but it does not seem that they put the foot at it. The first European to make mention of it is Sir Francis Drake the July 24th 1579. It accosts there then to provide its ship out of eggs of birds and meat of Phoque. It names then these islands the islands of Saint James , name which will remain only for one package of rocks in Farralones of the Northern . It is probable that another explorer, Juan Rodriguez de Cabrillo, saw them front but nobody before Drake left some of hard copy.

The name of Farallones (“Rocks”) is finally given by Sebastián Vizcaíno which them Cartographie for the first time in 1603.
