Fantax

Fantax , character of Cartoon imagined by J.K. Melwyn-Nash (pseudonym of Marcel Navarro) and drawn by Chott (pseudonym of Pierre Mouchotte) which was one of the first - and undoubtedly most known - of the dressed up heroes published in the French press

This character makes a first and short appearance in 1946 in Paris-World-Magazine , newspaper weekly which will disappear quickly. He appears then, of July 1st, 1946 at the second quarters 1949, in a booklet which is devoted to him and bears its name. Some episodes were drawn by Robert Rocca. The Chott draftsman also wrote some scenarios, in particular the last eight published in 1959 and illustrated by Remi Bordelet.

Stripped of extraordinary capacities, Fantax is not strictly speaking a Super-héros although it is presented in a costume red and black and that it hiding place his true identity. In the civil life, it names Lord Horace Neighbor and follows the very honourable occupation of embassy attach3e. Hero of the shade, it disguises and leaves the night to make hunting for the gangsters whom it faces thanks to his trick and with its physical force.

This series was pointed out particularly by its extreme violence, even by a certain sadism, which was worth with its authors some legal vexations. Fantax did not hesitate, for example, to torture its adversaries to make them acknowledge their crimes. This legal eagerness will lead in 1959 to the discouragement of Chott, its last author, and with the stop of the series.

Hero evolving/moving on a border held between the good and the evil, his genealogy must be required at dark predecessor such as The Shadow or Fantômas , rather than at the dispensers of justice in the large heart who were The Phantom and Batman . For this same reason, its most obvious descendants meet in the press Italian (or English) in characters such as Diabolik, Satanik or Spiderman (which should not be confused with the superman of the Marvel Comics).
