Fanny and Alexandre

Fanny and Alexandre (in Swedish: Fanny och Alexander ) is a Swedish film written and carried out by Ingmar Bergman in 1982. It was initially a televised film divided into four parts, the whole during 312 minutes. A version of only 188 minutes left in rooms.

Bergman announced that this film would be its last. Indeed, he since then only did not write scenarios, and carried out some works for television (in particular After the repetition and Sarabande , the continuation of famous the Scènes of the married life ).

Synopsis

The history proceeds in the Sweden beginning of the 20th century. The film depicts the life of an young girl, Fanny, and of his/her brother Alexandre within an easy family, Ekdahl. The parents of Fanny and Alexandre work in the Théâtre and are very happy whole until the sudden death of the father. Shortly after this drama, the mother finds an applicant, a bishop, and accepts his proposal for a marriage. She moves at his place with the children; it is a place where reign a severe and ascetic atmosphere. The children are subjected to his strict and pitiless authority.

In addition to the topics such as the Christianity, the Repentance and the tender with the authority, the talking film about the Amour, the ruptures, the Fantôme S, and the Paranormal, as well as the topic very bergmanien of the Existentialisme. The father of the children is playing the phantom of the king died in Hamlet when it has his fatal heart attack. The character of the bishop, and what arrives to him, make think of the usurpation Claudius and the final revenge of the young prince.

Rewards

The film left in rooms to the United States in 1983 and accepted six nominations with the Oscar, it gained four of them:

Bergman was named for the price of the best realizer and that of the best original screenplay, but it did not gain them, putting indeed fine at its chances to receive a Oscar for a film.

On the technical plan, Fanny and Alexandre is not any more the last film of Bergman since the very succeeded play Sarabande was filmed for television and then left as cinemas art and test. In spite of that, Fanny and Alexandre is, practically speaking, its last film.

DVD

There is no DVD doubled nor subtitle in French of Fanny and Alexandre . However, there exists a version in Zone 2 (published by Artificial Eye) in VOSA (i.e., in Swedish with English subtitles). He is published by Criterion for Zone 1 (also VOSA).
