Fanny Hill
Fanny Hill , or Memoirs off has off Woman Pleasure , Mémoires of a prostitute in English, is an erotic Romance of the writer English John Cleland.
Written in 1749 in London whereas Cleland was in prison for debts, this book is regarded as the first erotic novel and its publication caused scandal. As of its publication, the Église of England required of the authorities to prohibit “this wretched book which is a true insult with the religion and the moralities”. So Cleland was stopped and accused “to have encouraged with the vice the subjects of the king”.
However specimens of the book were sold under the coat and this one ends up being spread with the the United States, where it was interdict in 1821 for Obscénité.
In 1963, G.B. Putnam published off the book under the title John Cleland' S Memoirs off has Woman Pleasure which was also, immediately, interdict for obscenity. The editor carried the business in front of justice. In a decision of 1966, the Supreme court ends up enacting that the book did not deserve the qualifier of obscene, according to the standard Roth.
