Fandango

The fandango is a musical style and a traditional Danse Spanish of couple, of Andalusian origin , on a rate/rhythm 3/4 or 6/8, accompanied by Castagnettes and Guitare which can be sung.

Known as of the 17th century, the fandango is of ternary Rythme (3/4) and of rather fast tempo (allegretto); it was formerly one 6/8 slow. The Arab etymology of the term seems doubtful; a African origin is preferred to him. The dance was introduced in Europe by the Spaniards who returned from the the Western Indies after having attended the off-set Blacks of Guinea.

Characteristics and alternatives of the fandango

Characterized by sharp movements, the fandango is practiced in couple with an accompaniment with the guitar and the castanets. Its origins go back to the 17th century, time when its rate/rhythm was relatively slower; the fandango is then danced of the Andalusia and the Estrémadure until the Asturies and with the Basque Country, while passing by the provinces of the Raising, without forgetting the Portugal and the America.

There exist regional or local alternatives fandango, whose denomination varies according to the places: murcianas , malagueña , granaínas , will cartageneras , tarantas , verdiales or bandolás . All are related with the séguédille Castilian and with the Boléro.

The fandango has a minor ramification: the Fandanguillo or fandango of Cadiz. It is of a popular song and a dance including/understanding an introduction to the guitar over nine times, called salida (“left”), which precedes the verse by six worms.

The fandango in minor mode, by one movement is at the same time actuated and voluptuous, and without marked finale, which makes it possible to start again it as much time than one wants. The fandango is carried out to two, with the sound of the guitar; the dancers mark the movement of it with castanets and by striking heel.

One dances also the fandango in form of Contredanse to 4 couples (Séguédille). Known since the 17th century, the fandango made the admiration of Casanova which appreciated the accents in love of them.

At the same time dance of city and theater, the fandango is one of the Spanish dances oldest and most current.

The fandango is also a traditional Danse Portuguese of the area of the Ribatejo.
