Family of Castle-Gontier
The family of Castle-Gontier is a family which marked the history of the Anjou. It is related to the history of the Baronnie of Castle-Gontier.
History
The lords of Castle-Gontier did not reserve themselves in the territory (see: Baronnie of Castle-Gontier) which was pledged for them châtellenies where they could raise fortresses which were their field and were used to them as defense for the remainder of their baronnie, as the lords of Laval and Mayenne did it. They were satisfied with the useful possession of the forests of Valle and Flée, part of the Forêt of Bouère, and royalties on the pledged strongholds by them.

Armorial bearings
Like the other families of old feudality, that of the barons of Castle-Gontier had armorial bearings towards the beginning of the 13th century. We can believe that the seal of the act of Renaud and Alard of Castle-Gontier in favor of the hospital is the first of which they used, and which it goes back to their majority. The act is of 1206 and collectively given, but the seal is in the name of Alard alone, youngest of the two brothers, probably because the elder one, Renaud, had died at the time of the sealing of the charter. In 1215 a charter in favor of the Abbey of Saint-Serge and the following year the donation of Guillaume Bariller to the Catches of the forest of Craon by the same lord, are also sealed, according to Dom Housseau (T. IV, n° 2.415), of one ecu mouths charged with 3 gold rafters. One knows two other ecus of the successor of Alard IV, Jacques of Castle-Gontier, one of 1237, in Cartulaire of Saint-Serge, in charge of 3 rafters, the broken first; identical counter-seal; caption seal: SIGILLUM JACOBI DOMINI CASTRI GONTERI ; counter-seal: VERITAS.
