Family of Borough

The family of Borough (Latin of Burgo )

It is about a family belonging to the great nobility Norman. installed in England after the Battle of Hastings (1066), where the name was anglicized in " of Burgh ". The principal branch set in Ireland in 1175 of or the name tranforma in " Burk, Burke or Bourke ". Certain descendants gaëlisant even their patronym in " Mac William " or " Mac Liam ".

Is a family member, Hubert de Bourg, Count de Kent, regent and Justicier of England and Ireland of 1216 with 1232, while his/her brother (?) Guillaume founded the Irish branch of the family and becomes titular lord of Thomond and Limerick.

The son of this last, Richard de Bourg, dispenser of justice of Ireland of 1228 with 1238, makes the conquest of the Connacht in 1235, and his/her son Gautier de Bourg is named count of Ulster in 1264.

Richard the Count Rouge (death 1326), wire of Gautier, lord of the Connacht and successor of its father for the county of Ulster, makes the conquest of all the north of Ireland.

the meutre in 1333 of Guillaume the Count Brun, small son and successor of Richard the Count Rouge was at the origin of a family civil war (1333 - 1340).

Two members of the branch junior Edmund Albanach and Ulick (Gaëlique Uleaigh ) being based on the gaelic tradition by succession by the men, seized the family grounds of Connaught which returned to Elisabeth de Burgh the young girl of Guillaume the Count Brun and future wife of Lionel of Antwerp. The king of England was in the obligation to validate the usurpation by granting his forgiveness in 1340.

The two nouveux lords shared the Connaught gave up their Norman names to take those of:

Mac William Ioachtar ( Elder the ) for Edmund (death in 1375) from where the lords come then Viscounts (1627) and counts (1785) from Mayo.

Mac William Uachtar ( the Junior ) for Ulick (death in 1353) from where the counts (1543) then marquis (1644) of Clanricard .

Nota: Baudouin '' of the Borough '', king de Jérusalem of anything is not attached to this famille.
