Family baobab tree

The project Baobab Family is a recognized association of public utility which maintains an orphanage close to Mombasa/Kenya and deals of the homeless people and the HIV positive people.

Vision

The name of the " project; Baobab tree " comes from the African thuja of the same name. This tree collects, during the short water, rain season for the periods of dryness. It gives to the human beings food, materials, clothing, remedies and protects them. It can shelter whole families in her hollow trunk. It grows slowly, but it with the force to survive long periods of dryness. In the project, the baobab tree is synonymous with increase in an effective development assistance in the long run.

Association

At the time of a voyage around the world, the founder of association Andreas Triebel makes a halt with the Kenya in 1994 and lives there with the autochtones until 1996. Of its return in Germany, he thinks unceasingly of the Enfants of the streets and decides into 2000 to buy a ground with Mikindani, suburbs of Mombasa.

In the month of March 2000, the first stone of a reception center for children and the mothers are posed.

In 2001, Andreas Triebel buys a new of the same ground cuts with its own money. Thus the children had more space, inside like outside. That made it possible, moreover, to even widen the hearth. In the month of May 2001, private initiative becomes an association declared, recognized like association Of public utility of the German administrations in October 2001. Andreas Triebel becomes the first president of association " Baobab tree Familien Projekt e.V.".

In January 2002, last work for the ground floor with Mikindani is completed and the first child can move in. During the summer 2003, an indigenous employee and two trainees deal with eight children who live in the house.

With the beginning of the year 2006, the first stage is built, making it possible to accommodate 40 children moreover.

In October 2006, the official registration as ONG (non-governmental organization) takes place in Kenya. Thus, Baobab Family is recognized like draft aid programme to the population. A stage which lasted persque 5 years, association refusing the funds emanating of corruption. The particular gifts, those of the godfathers and godmothers and the members are only used for the various projects, in all transparency.

Current projects

the Hearth Family Baobab tree for the children with Mikindani at the beginning of 2007: 31 children live in the house of the children of Family Baobab tree. Six employees and four trainees SEN occupy. It is still possible to accommodate approximately 70 children, but association needs godfathers to cover the expenses.

Prevention and assistance against virus HIV September 1st, 2006, the employees and the trainees started prevention campaign HIV. The team is composed HIV positive people and nonHIV positive people. Currently, the stress is laid on preventive actions in the schools and faculties, but also of other public places to carry out a good public awareness campaign. Then, of the actions will be carried out in the Bidonville S to count the people infected by the virus.

After this preliminary work, association wishes to develop a plan of assistance by its own means like in co-operation with other organizations, for the most touched zones. Active measurements of help concern the families which are touched by the HIV.

Production of the Family Baobab tree

To survive with art and the craft industry by creating jobs for HIV positive people and people homeless person: at the beginning of December 2005 the Family Baobab tree manufactured watering-cans and quinquets with old boxes; since March 2006 the offer increased enormously (EP jewels, craft industry, toothbrushes African etc) and is in full growth. The number of people employed increases in same time. For the future association intends to call upon intermediaries for the sale of its production

Projects envisaged

Village of children with Homa Bay after a Kenyan offered a ground of 30.000 m ² to the Family Baobab tree, association envisaged to build there a small village of children with a principal house and several places of rest to accommodate 10 children. It is also envisaged the construction of a school and a small hospital, in particular for the HIV positive people. An agricultural personal production is also in project and are being studied a solar project of installation and the rainwater re-use.

Association counts members, godfathers and sponsors in the whole world. Many musicians (inter alia Jahcoustix) support association.
