Synopsis

Still a descent into Hell. The conflict between Janice Baildon and its parents is without hope. Forced to fall through, disappointed by his/her friend, Janice is inserted in schizophrenia, more and more often finds themselves at the hospital and tumbles down a little each time. Helped at the beginning by a young innovative doctor, sudden Janice after the departure of Dr. Donaldson a series of electric shocks which makes of it a headstock without defense between the hands of clinicians incapabales include/understand the relational origin of its disorders.

Family Life is, with Matti da slegare of Marco Bellocchio ( Fous to untie , 1975), documentary around a special program of social rehabilitation mentally ills in the area of Parma (*), one of the films headlights of the movement animated by Ronald Laing and David Cooper in the Sixties and Seventies under the name of antipsychiatry.

In this film, one attends the destruction of a person by the system and the adults; any attempt at personal expression is received like an aggression and thus repressed. By the play of the repeated hospitalizations and drugs nerve sedatives dépersonnalisants, Janice is inserted little by little in a quasi experimental psychosis. The final sequence where it shown with a floor of students at the time of a " presentation; in Charcot" is poignant.

Hard film, protestor, Family Life are also teaching, in what it brilliantly shows by the psychological pressure and the paradoxical situations thus without exit, " how to return the other fou". (Harold Searles, effort to return the other insane one). It is an important film in the career of a committed realizer.
