Famagouste (in Greek: Αμμόχωστος , Ammóchostos ; in Turkish, Gazimağusa ) is a city and a port of Cyprus, on the east coast. Its population is of 39.000 inhabitants. From the XIV to the XV century, it was colony gênoise. In 1570, when it was a Venetian fortress, it was attacked and besieged by the Turks. The commander Marcantonio Bragadin was skinned sharp and the insult of its martyr contributed to join together the Christian fleet with Lépante. This victory did not prevent that the peace of March 7th, 1573 recognized Othoman sovereignty on Cyprus. Since 1974, the city is located De facto in Cyprus of North.
