Falsetto

The falsetto - or falsetto voice , or falsetto , in Italian - is a vocal technique using the acute register more - sometimes called register of head , light register , or voice of head - obtained by preventing the normal contraction of the vocal cords. The term is especially applied to the Chant eurs of male sex, this in order to distinguish this type well of emission of voice of the opposed technique, more usual, using the Chest voice - or register of chest -, often considered as culturally more natural. The falsetto voice is not very powerful, but of a pleasant stamp. Its ambitus (wide), relatively short, approaches that of the female Contralto.

Classical music

In Classical music, the Chant or using his falsetto voice is called Contreténor or falsettist. This vocal typology was used a long time, in the Musique profane as well as crowned, of the Moyen-âge until the 18th century.

  • With the birth of the “beautiful canto” - at the beginning of the 17th century -, the falsettists were gradually competed with by the high-against, the Ténor S and especially, the Castrat S, then ended up disappearing with the traditional period.

  • During the 19th century, the technique will be almost completely forsaken, except however male comic employment for the theater - Ténor puffs out and low puffs out - which will use sometimes the falsetto - exclusively with an aim of accentuating the grotesque character of the characters whom they incarnate, but never like technique with whole share.

  • After an eclipse of almost two hundred years, this vocal technique was given to the honor in the middle of the 20th century, at the time of the redécouverte of the repertory known as “old”, i.e., that covering the medieval Musique, the Musique of the Rebirth and the Baroque music.

Traditional musics

  • the Yodel, technique vocal of the mountains of the the Tyrol, whose main feature is to use in alternation the falsetto voice and the chest voice, consists of a fast succession of vocalized intervals emphasizing the passage between the two registers.
