False relation
In tonal harmony, a false relation is, in a sequence, a a little hard effect between two sounds belonging to two successive agreements, but to two different voices. The unpleasant bringing together produced by the false relation must be either avoided, or arranged.
-
One distinguishes the false relation chromatic and the false relation from triton.
Chromatic false relation
The false relation chromatic - or false relation of octave - occurs when the three notes of a chromatic Mouvement follow one another in different part S.
-
So that the chromatic movement is correct, therefore, to avoid to it chromatic false relation, the three notes which carry out it - preparatory note, chromatic note and resolvent note - must imperatively be in the same part. This false relation is however tolerated - because inevitable in this case - when it is the low which tackles the faded note (example C).
-
In accordance with the rules of lining of the gravitational notes, one generally abstains from doubling a note which is in a chromatic movement. However, this lining is sometimes inevitable. If it is the preparatory note which is doubled, the two parts must proceed then by contrary movement. If it is the faded note or the resolvent note which is doubled, it is necessary to bring this lining by contrary movement. It should be noted that the lining of the note deteriorated by contrary movement attenuates to it false relation but does not remove it, i.e. such a lining could be allowed only when one cannot make differently.

False relation of triton
The false relation of triton occurs when a agreement has for low IVe degree - whatever the sound state -, and that the agreement preceding or following contains the sensitive . This false relation is called thus because of the increased quad - or: triton, i.e., “three let us tons” - which separates both notes in question. Hardness is accentuated if the sensitive one is placed to the upper part (A) example.
-
Notons first of all that this false relation is absolutely not awkward when the second agreement is an agreement of Dominante (B) example. In all the other cases, and in particular, if the first agreement is an agreement of dominant, this false relation must be avoided.
-
It faulty false relation of triton generally occurs on poor or not very used sequences; only that of Ve towards IVe degree and that of IIIe towards IVe degree meet sometimes.
-
It is however allowed if the second agreement is placed on a weak time, or a weak part of time (example C). When this second agreement is on key period, it false relation of triton is tolerated provided that one puts the sensitive one in an intermediate left (D) example.
