The Falémé is a river of West Africa which takes its source in the northern part of the Fouta-Djalon (Guinea), at an altitude of 800 meters. It is the most important affluent of the river Senegal on its left bank.

History

Because of its strategic situation, several forts were built on Falémé at the colonial era .

Physical characteristics

Falémé enters to the Mali before forming the border between Mali and the Senegal. To 30 km upstream of Bakel, it is thrown in the river Senegal. At this place its annual throughput is about 200 m/s. Its overall length is of 650 km.

Economy

The river is navigable on approximately 200 km.

A layer of Iron of very good quality, prospected for a few years, has seemed very promising. It could be exploited during a score of years, with an average of extradition of 12 million tons of iron ores per annum.
