Complete summary

This novel tells the history of Manfred Brinkmann at the time of its years college. It is a boy solitary, introverted, who tests great difficulties of communicating with his comrades. The means which it implements to reach that point is the writing of letters (we are in 1990) even of articles, as that which it writes for the newspaper of the college, under the title " Inter aliuloj" (vf. p. 27). This title failed besides to be the name of the novel. The editor preferred to re-elect it, which proved to be a good choice. He trails his faintness of the college at the university, where the things do not improve for him, while passing by the cinema. He also will consult a psychologist. All this remains without much effect, until he discovers Esperanto at the time of a Franco-German meeting.

Comments

The account is clearly autobiographical. The author, just like Manfred Brinkmann, are German, are quiet somebody of (what is an euphemism for " shy person, sauvage" , that is to say a germanism), and began the study of Esperanto in 1990. One of the questions which one can put to the reading of the novel: is Esperanto presented under one day favorable? One can of doubt when it is seen that the main character seems to go to the meetings of Esperanto only to meet the woman of his life. It seems obnubilated by this idea.

However at one moment, with the beginning of its life of espérantophone, Mandred holds a stand and makes the promotion of Esperanto. Its speech delivers a council to us which can be re-used. It is a question of comparing the promotion of this language with the fight for the human rights (p. 58). Lastly, it is enough damage which the novel finishes so abruptly, and not so fortunately that one could have wished it; whereas in reality, the author finally succeeded in achieving his goal.

However, this work remains one of the essential novels of the original literature in Esperanto.

The author

Ulrich Matthias is a famous German espérantophone, author of at least two great successes of the original literature in Esperanto, Fajron sentas semi intern and Esperanto: new Latin for the Church , which makes it appear in a very closed circle. It is in addition a credit of the community espérantophone, by its implication passed to GEJ, and its current role at IKUE and EDE to Germany.
