Fair of the book of Brive

The Foire of the book of Brive is a literary demonstration being held each year in early November in the town of Brive-the-Strapping woman. The Fair is regarded as one of the most important literary events of France - the second after the Living room of the Parisian Book. The Fair is the occasion of a certain number of handing-over of price of which the prestigious Prix of the French language.

History of the Fair

The first edition of the Fair of the book took place in 1973, after the dared bet of a group of friends set on reading: to sell books on the market. Associated with a bookseller of the city, they organized their demonstration on the place of Guierle, where the market is held. One organized oneself then with the means of the edge, the boards and some trestles, and the book was with the festival. The mayor of then, Jean Charbonnel, minister of De Gaulle, observed by far this demonstration which joins together alter-mondialists, impassioned literatures, regionalistic, etc… which it will inaugurate itself, surely without imagining the importance that it would take. Always animated of the same passion, the organizers renewed, the two following years, this experiment good child mixing the book with the liver-fat in the middle of the city.

After six years without Fair, the town of Brive lives to reappear the event in 1982. This time the organizers transfer the things into large: even love of the book but already 30.000 visitors pressing itself to reach the Fair, of which Jean d' Ormesson which will make him the honor be its first president. This date marked the second birth of the Fair of the Book which joins together for this " first officielle" a cinquantaire authors of which Francoise Xénakis, Vladimir Volkoff, Christian Signol, Denis Tillinac, Janine Boissard, Régine Desforges…

It is into 1985 that the Fair of the Book took a new dimension. First of all “Train of the Book celebrates it” made its appearance, transporting the authors since the Gare of Austerlitz towards Brive. This train is very appreciated authors because it allows the exchanges around tables copiously furnished with mets of local tradition. Thus Erik Orsenna called Brive “City Cholesterol” after its passage appreciated by the strong city. Then the jury Goncourt migrated the same year there, for the advertisement of the final selection of the Prix Goncourt. Only with each event its scandal, and it is then Bernard Pivot which revealed the opening day before of the Fair the selection of Goncourt in its Apostrophe emission. The advertisement of the Goncourt selection will consequently be made each year at the time of the Fair of the Book, since the Castle of Manor house-Novell (Varetz) until Goncourt definitively leave the strong city after the edition of 1995 because of the advance of the advertisement of its final selection.

During years the Fair continued its expansion. Thus from 1986 the Price of the Language France is decreed there (become Prix of the French language), in 1990 the Fair amalgamated with the Salon of the Book of Montreal, and in 1997 it was chaired by Bernadette Chirac.

Thus with the passing of years followed one another the Fair of the Book of Brive French, sworn academicians Goncourt, authors with success and young writers, members of the École of Brive, high-speed motorboats of the small screen, philosophers, etc

Organization

The Fair is held generally first Friday, Saturday and Sunday of November. Supplementing the Fair, conferences, concerts, exposures are held in the city throughout the weekend. Thus for example followed one another on the scenes brivists Charlélie Couture, Francis Cabrel, Joan-Pau Verdier, William Sheller, Maxime the Forester… In 2006 it is Bernard Lavilliers which sang Ferré at the time of the 25e Foire of the Book. Whereas it joined together 30.000 visitor and writer about fifty in 1982, the Fair attracted in 2006 nearly 135.000 readers brought together around 515 writers.

The Price of the French language

Created in 1986 by the Town of Brive-the-Strapping woman, the Price of the French language reward the work of a personality of the literary, artistic world or scientist who contributed, in an important way, by the style of its works or its action, to illustrate the quality and the beauty of the French language. The jury of this prestigious price, whose presidency is revolving, is composed members of the French Academy and Académie Goncourt and writers. He is equipped with an amount of 10.000 euros.

Price of poetry of the Mallarmé Academy

Founded in 1937, the Academy Mallarmé is one of the most prestigious academies of contemporary poetry. It decrees each year a price which rewards a poet for French expression for the whole of its work whose collection was the subject of a publication in the year.

Price of the Cartoon of the Point

On the initiative of the weekly magazine the Point, this price will reward a cartoon chosen among a selection for an about sixty albums put in competition by the various publishers. The president of the jury is Wolinski.

Price Ground of France/the Mountain

This price created by Association Ground of France in partnership with the newspaper the Mountain has the aim of distinguishing a work, novel or account, emphasizing a ground of France and those which live there.

Price of the News

Created by association New from here and besides, the contest of the New festival on 2006 its 20th anniversary. The town of Brive-the-Strapping woman honors this year this contest while giving the prices at the time of the Fair with the Book.

Price of the readers of the Town of Brive

This price, especially created at the time of the 25 years of the Fair of the Book of Brive-the-Strapping woman, will make it possible a jury of readers brivists to elect their prize winner among a selection of works established by the booksellers and librarians of the city.

The prices youth

Price 12/17

Price of literature for the teenagers, this price relates to two age brackets: the 12-14 years and the 15-17 years. It reward either of the authors for the whole of their work, or of the works taken separately especially written for these age brackets.

Price of the album youth General advice - “Alain Gazeau”

Sponsored by the General advice of Corrèze. Among the seven albums selected by the Departmental Library of loan and the Public library of Brive-the-Strapping woman, the final choice returns to several hundreds of older children from 3 to 6 years.

The edition 2006

The Fair of the Book 2006, which was 25th name, was held the Friday the 3rd, Saturday the 4th and Sunday, November 5. It was placed under the high-patronage of Bernadette Chirac and was chaired by Jean d' Ormesson, member of the French Academy. It succeeded thus this function with Abdou Diouf, former president of the République of Senegal and general secretary of the International organization of the francophonie and precedes Bernard Pivot, president for the edition 2007.
