Fagne

The Fagne is a border region of Belgium and France which extends in Walloon region with horse on the south from the provinces from Namur and Hainaut, and which also penetrates in the North of the France, in Avesnois. It corresponds to the Western edge of the solid mass of the Ardennes.

The localities of Couvin, of Cerfontaine, Rancid, Trélon and Solre-the-Castle belong to this area. The commune of Wallers-Trélon was renamed besides Wallers-in-Fagne in August 2007. Philippeville is its capital.

Although having the same etymological origin (of “mud”), Fagne should not be confused with another Belgian area, the High-Fagnes , located at the east of the country.

Another version of the etymology of " Fagnes" attach this word to Fagus, the Hêtre. It is indeed a wet, often of marsh and ponds, forest area, favourable with the growth of the beech, even if in certain sectors its competitiveness is limited by late spring freezing and the hydromorphie of the funds of valleys.

In this wet area, the sphagnum (sphaigne) is a very widespread foam and could be another etymological origin.
