Litt. “annihilation, destruction”, the fanâ' (Arab: فَناء, destruction; fainding ) is a term soufi vocabulary of Islam the rise in the spirit, in the contemplation of the divine things, which detaches a person of the sensitive objects which surround it until its human attributes with the profit of the divine attributes vanish. The fanâ' is a concept worked out by the theologists soufis to escape any idea from mystical fusion between the man and God who would be condemned by the ulémas sunnites. This state is generally followed by that of the Baqa' (“existence”, “subsistence”) which makes it possible to the disciple to integrate his state of awakening all while harmonizing it with the space-time contingencies, businesses of the “low-world”.
