Factor of Flare
The factor of flare is a Aberration due to a parasitic diifusion of the light inside objective. This diffusion involves a general fall of the contrast of the image obtained.
This factor is quantified by means of a Mire special made up of a black square on white zone. The factor of flare corresponds to the difference in illumination of the black zone of the test card when it occupies the whole of the framework and when it does not occupy any more that 10% of the framework.
The objectives most touched by this phenomenon are generally those whose optical formula includes/understands the most lenses, each lens offering a new possibility of diffusion of the light.
The anti-reflecting treatments are one of the means used to fight against this phenomenon in the modern objectives.
This effect can in addition be desired, there exist systems such as the varicon which are specifically studied to control this phenomenon and cause a drop in a controlled way contrast of the image obtained.
By abuse language, the flare is often limited to the halations which are formed in the objective when a specific source of light is in the image or with the immediate surroundings of the framework. In fact the same phenomena come into play these halations, but in way extrème.
