The Front rhodésien (Rhodesian Face - RF) was a political party of Southern Rhodesia (later Rhodesia then Zimbabwe) whereas the country lived under a parliamentary mode of white minority.
In 1962, the RF succeeded the Dominion Left which was, during the preceding decade, the principal party of opposition of Southern Rhodesia du within the Fédération of Rhodesia and of Nyassaland. It gathered the white opposed to the immediate accession with the capacity of the black majority.
Its first leader is Winston Field which directed the party of the Dominion.
In December 1962, the RF gains the elections of Southern Rhodesia with 55% of the voices and Field becomes Prime Minister.
In 1964, Field is replaced by Ian Smith, is perceived like more coriace and more voluntarist.
During the elections which followed one another between 1964 and 1979, the RF was constantly renewed with the capacity (50 of the 66 seats of the Parliament were reserved to the only white electorate) with a very vast majority of the seats and voices. During these 15 years, Ian Smith assumed the role of leader of the Face rhodésien like that of Prime Minister.
The principles of the Face rhodésien rested on 15 axioms of which:
- the safeguarding of the rights of each racial group in order to maintain their own identities;
- the maintenance of the agrarian law which had ségrégé the territory rhodésien between white and black owners;
- opposition to an immediate racial integration;
- a law the labor protecting the white workers;
- the maintenance of the possibility of ségréger places and public conveniences
In 1979, the first multiracial elections in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia reflect fine with the parliamentary domination of the Face rhodésien. Nevertheless, the RF carried the totality of the 28 seats reserved for the white electorate and Ian Smith remained with the government.
In 1980, at the time of the second multiracial elections, the RF carried the totality of the 20 seats reserved for the white.
In 1981, the Face rhodésien, always directed by Ian Smith, renamed republican Front . During the parliamentary session, 11 of the 20 elected officials of the RF made defection to join in particular ZANU-PF, the party of Robert Mugabe.
In 1985, the RF carried 15 of the 20 seats allotted to the white.
Into 1986, the RF changes name again and becomes the preserving Alliance of Zimbabwe (Conservative Alliance off Zimbabwe - CAZ), directed by the son of Ian Smith. Opened with all the races, this party will not have discounted success.
In 1987, the white electoral college was abolished. Several white deputies joined the ZANU-PF or the independent ones whereas Ian Smith withdrew active political life.
