Set of themes of artistic research

Works of Fabrice Gygi obey a precise vocabulary. First of all by the attention paid to materials: painted aluminum, wood, concrete, painted steel, leather. Materials rough and especially industrialists, cold but paradoxically sensual. One wants to touch works which attract by their matter and their grain, but which evoke also the coldness, brutality. Thus, the steel painted beige of the Pylons: the very light grain of painting on steel, this color almost flesh, the smooth and soft aspect… The reasons compose the other element of this vocabulary: the grating, the bar, the pylon which is urban elements, of building site, always treated on a minimalist mode, purified.

The combination of materials and this formal minimalism confers a double functionality and direction on works. For example, the sculpture with variable geometry Caillebotis is conceived starting from a tension between the rigid framework of the aluminum grid and the mobility of the wood bars which can be or not encased. Giant play of address? Or barricades on standby? This kind of tension and ambivalence characterizes the sculptures of Gygi - between softness (aluminum paints Grating, the leather of Y) and brutality (that of the strangeness of the direction), between freedom and control, close friend and public.

This tension, and the critical force of Gygi, is very sensitive in the room where a sculpture and a series of linogravures cohabit. In the sculpture Thorax, stainless attracts, calls the touch, and freezes at the same time. One wants to draw the cord which holds the object suspended above it ground, to handle it, while fearing the effect. Is it about an inoffensive giant bobby pin suspended with a pulley? Or an instrument ready to crush, destroy? An instrument of torture? … On the walls the linogravures (important technique in the work of Gygi) present small drawings to the reasons simple, tender, funny, sometimes ironic, which return to the intimacy of the artist. As for the sculptures, the simplicity of the form combines with an interest affirmed for the technique.

Fabrice Gygi questions the mechanisms of the authority by causing a bitter taste between softness and oppression. It is a question of revealing the authoritative wheels, the tensions between freedom and control, protection and threat. From physical attraction, even erotic, for the sculptures and of the sculptures between them (Y intertwine one of the three Pylons), Gygi makes emerge questions serious about the capacities, on the violence of the human reports/ratios where “each citizen () is not a potential authoritative figure, since its position is always contiguous and permeable with the capacity” (Fabrice Gygi).
