Faaa (often transcribed Faaa in an erroneous way, or Faa' has or Faa' has in the documents in French when the true Polynesian consonant (named {{okina}} eta in Tahitien) transcribing the Glottal stop is not available) is a common littoral to the North-West of Tahiti, located in the Windward Islands in the Archipel of the Company in French Polynésie.

This residential zone, near to the capital PAPEETE, is the first vision of the island for the travellers arriving at the international airport.

History

This commune was formerly called Tefana or Tetaha .

The construction of the international airport in 1960-61 will generate a geographical and economic upheaval major. Two large hotels will be built the Beachcomber and the Hôtel Tahiti today Sheraton .

Situation

The commune of Faaa is located at the North-West of the island of Tahiti vis-a-vis Moorea in the Windward Islands in the Archipel of the Company in French Polynésie. Its climate is tropical.

Faaa is bordering on the common of PAPEETE to the east, Pirae in south-east and Punaauia in the south. Pirae is not directly accessible by the road being bordering only in mountain. The Pacific Ocean borders all the littoral.

Access roads

Two roads allow the crossing of Faaa of PAPEETE Punaauia:

  • the road of belt to the sea level curves with the foot of the mountain. It gives access to all the districts of the city by perpendicular ways side mountain.
  • the road of western release (RDO) built in the Ninety is a by-pass higher overlapping in the mountain the access roads to the various districts. This 2 times 2 ways at the speed limited to 90 km/h allowed the reduction of the stoppers but only with Faaa. The entry and the exit of the RDO remain always problematic at its ends at the rush hours.

Demography

Faaa French Polynesia with 28.339 inhabitants (census 2002) is the most populated city.

Administration

The commune of Faaa is directed today by its mayor Oscar Temaru, leader of the independence opposition.
