FRA Mauro

FRA Mauro , born towards 1385 with Venice and died in 1460 in the same city, was a monk Italian Camaldule 15th century, which was most famous Cosmographe of his time.

Biography

FRA Mauro carried out, of 1457 with 1459, beautiful a Mappemonde, which one still sees in one of the rooms of the Monastère of Saint-Michel of Murano close to Venice.

It charted the totality of the Old world, with a surprising precision, including written comments which reflected the Connaissance Géographique of its time.

FRA Mauro created the Carte with its assistant Andrea Bianco, navigator - Cartographe, under the responsibility of a commission named by the king Alphonse V of Portugal. The chart was finished the April 24th 1459, and was sent to the Portugal, but was lost. A letter of the legislator of Venice accompanied the chart. She addressed to the prince Henri the Navigator, the uncle of Alphonse V. She encouraged the prince to continue to finance the voyages of exploration.

FRA Mauro died the following year while it made a copy of the chart for the Lord of Venice, and it copy was finished by Andrea Bianco.

A scientist camaldule published in 1806 a description of this Mappemonde, in-fol.

A contemporary medal commemorative in the honor of its cartographic work described FRA Mauro like the “geographus incomparabilis” .
