FN MAG
FN MAG 58 is a Mitrailleuse developed by Belgian FN Herstal in 1958. Name MAG is the acronym of machine-gun to gas .
Operation
The weapon functions by loan, in a point of the gun, combustion gases of the powder of each cartridge. A regulator of gases makes it possible to regulate the rate of shooting to approximately 600 or 1 000 blows per minute.Taking again the principles worked out by the German army lasting the Second world war with MG34, the weapon, cooled by air, is equipped with an interchangeable gun. It is generally delivered with two guns what makes it possible to draw with one while the other cools. The manufacturer thus recommends to change the gun all the 200 blows at maximum rate.
The weapon draws with opened cylinder head, which means that the mobile cylinder head is retained with the back until the moment when the gunner presses the relaxation. Its mechanism is directly inherited the Fusil-mitrailleur Browning BAR M1918, one of very first rifles machine gunners. It is fed by band of 100 blows or more.
The weapon is equipped with a bipod but can be gone up on a tripod or a vehicle. In the last both cases, the stick and the bipod can be removed and can the case falling due being equipped with a pair of handles located at the back of the weapon. The recent models are equipped with a standard rail which makes it possible to assemble a whole range of glasses.
