History

Before the OBC

When in 1964, FIBA decides to divide the world into geographical areas, the Australia and the New Zealand feel a little injured by this novel mode of qualification for international competitions from which they from now on are excluded. This problem is quickly mitigated since the two nations headlights of the Oceania are attached to the zone Asia. But this resolution is only one diversion of the problem, since FIBA Asia does not appreciate these displacements so much that one imposes to him, more especially as as a whole these two nations are stronger than those of the continent of Asia at the time. The October 3rd 1967, the 2 federations meet in company of the Fiji islands and New Guinea-News-Guinea which claimed them also their right to competitiveness. Thus arrive the first steps of the Confederation océanienne of basketball ( Oceania Basketball Confederation or OBC), officially created in June 1968

The era of the OBC

As of 1968 FIBA is unanimous as for the arrival of this new confederation, and immediately accommodates it in its center. Little by little various nations of Oceania come to enlarge the rows of the OBC, and, in 1974 FIBA grants a systematic place to a representative of the Oceania zone for international competitions.

1981 mark birth of the Tournament of Oceania, in other words the Cut of Oceania of the nations .

The years 2000

Since the years 2000, FIBA partially re-elected the confederation which thus bears the two names of Oceania Basketball Confederation or FIBA Oceania according to the context (will intra or extra océanien).
