History

Origin at 1918

In 1901, to the exposure of Milan the any new business F.I.A.T exposes two slow trains and singular a small trailer motorized for firemen: thus is born what will be the first true truck, FIAT 24HP of 1903. It constitutes the starting of the production of light commercial vehicles for FIAT. The 24 HP is rather small (like all the vehicles of the time), with dimensions similar to those of the current light commercial vehicles, but which could transport up to 4000 kg of goods.

Being given nature, revolutionist for the time, of FIAT 24 HP a homologation of the product was necessary. Three prototypes are then built, and the 24 HP pass all the tests with brilliance so that even the Army of the King of Italy starts to be interested in the new vehicle. In 1906 the 24HP is produced in small series, while its successor, the “carriage automobile” 18-24HP is produced in a great number of specimens because he was an enormous success.

It from 1911 that the production begins from the first “true commercial vehicles”, before just like is required dictated First World War, and who - after a pause during the war - will begin again immediately afterwards. During this period export represented a very significant part in the turnover of FIAT and they was the armies of the various countries truths customers of FIAT, which ensured the supply of light commercial vehicles the Ministries for the War of France, Russia, Greece and Great Britain.

In 1911 FIAT presents the 1F (F for " fourgon"), the first vehicle with a true body of van, this nimble vehicle drifted from the car FIAT Tipo 1, had a payload of 500 kg and was ideal for the services with short ray. La Poste Britannique acquired of several specimens of it. The same year appeared robust FIAT 2F, derived from FIAT Tipo 2 of 1910. A military version was also available and Royal Navy, the English Royal Navy acquired several hundreds of them.

From 1918 to 1945

After the economic crisis of 1921, and already in 1922 various elements contributed to a resumption of the sector. In the month of March 1923 the building work of the first Highway in the world Milan them Italian Lakes, begins.

Confidence in the future of the commercial vehicles and industrial is however still to build. For that, in 1925, FIAT decides to invest more in the sector of the light commercial vehicles, in particular in the production of freight vehicles, by enriching its range and by diversifying the offer in terms of range, volume and motorizations. During this period even the definition of “light commercial vehicle continues”, it is today the section in lower part of the 3.5 tons.

The various light trucks of range FIAT such as the 502F, 503F, 505F, 507F and 509F are the answers to an increasing demand of vehicles specialized on precise requirements of work and transport, including the ambulances, the vehicles for the firemen or the Post office, etc…

In 1928, FIAT engages even more in diversification of its activities and accompanies the growth on behalf of transport on road. It also decides to take part financially in the project of Autoroute Turin-Milan, artery which was going to connect the two productive poles most important of Italy.

FIAT creates also SAVA (Public limit company of credit vehicles), organization of completely new credit for the time.

FIAT is combined with other manufacturers inhabitants of Turin specialized in the sector to optimize the production costs. In 1932 is born FIAT 508 Balilla Van , small van light, handy, easy to lead, called " Pigmeo" - it represented the utility variation of the famous small car combining the comfort of the cars of the time and an engine of less than 1l that rolled. These will be more than 113.000 specimens of 508 Balilla which will be produced in 5 years - of which many vans.

It is at this same period as first truck FIAT been driven by a robust diesel engine appears, FIAT 621. With a payload of 2250 kg, it had a cabin closed with two downward pane and access doors, of an opening windshield with compass. The plate-bucket and its racks or the racks of the dump trucks, could be surmounted by metallic arcs to support an impermeable cover. All this made of it a vehicle designed expressly for the transport of the goods. In 1934 the range is enriched with a diesel engine 4 cylinders by 55CV instead of the 45 CV by the engine gasoline. Series 621, in addition to the motorizations diesel and gasoline, was already available in electric version, with the batteries under the cockpit.

From 1945 to 1966

During first half of the years '40, production FIAT strongly will fall because of the armed conflict, of the bombardments which seriously damage the town of Turin and factories FIAT, like those of the subcontractors. At the end of the second world war, the sector of the light commercial vehicles records a considerable development. FIAT includes/understands quickly that this development of the economy does not relate to only industry, but will touch all the layers of the company like the craftsmen, tradesmen and free lances. All would need means of transport adapted to their requirements. Thus in 1947, whereas the new car FIAT 1100 knows a level of sale excel, FIAT decides to carry out derived versions from these vehicles. The 1100 were equipped with a very robust and reliable engine, but it is especially the quality of the transmission and the extremely resistant frame which made it possible to carry out the commercial derivative FIAT 1100 ALR. The importance of this vehicle is paramount to include/understand the development of the commercial models produced in the immediate future post-war period, until becoming, in the imaginary collective, one of the symbols of the Italian rebirth. Moreover the lengthened frame allowed various uses in the agricultural domain, industrialist and for the transport of the people. FIAT 1100 ALR is considered the first of long series of commercial models.

From 1967 to 1980

FIAT 238 is a van of large dimensions produces by FIAT of 1967 to 1983. Following very the good performances obtained by FIAT 600 Multipla, FIAT decides to renew all its range of commercial vehicles and presents the model 238 . This model is the natural substitute of the 1100T . This model was available in various configurations (which will be then taken again for the following models like FIAT 242 and the Ducato): van, van, frame-cabin, minibus and ambulance. In spite of the arrival of new FIAT 242, the 238 will continue its career with light a restyling, until 1983.

With half of the Seventies, group FIAT reorganizes in independent branches of industry and constitutes specialized companies: cars with FIAT Car; the industrial vehicles with FIAT V.I then in 1975 the creation of IVECO - very important stage in the history of goods transport - and appears division FIAT Derived Commercial vehicles then.

In 1974, FIAT V.C launches the models FIAT 242, FIAT 900T and the 127 Fiorino, manufactured in Brazil where it is still produced in 2007. A network of sale specialized is made up to offer a maximum of services to these customers. The FIAT 242 is the fruit of a trade agreement with Citroen which will market this vehicle under its mark under the name C35. It is also a period of great acquisitions for FIAT.

In 1978, FIAT and PSA sign an agreement for the design and the manufacture of a new van, thus the company Southern SEVEL east creates, European Societé Light vehicles. The van FIAT 242 strongly influenced the production of commercial vehicles FIAT with important technological repercussions on the following versions, Ducato in particular. In addition to the power and reliability, another characteristic of these vehicles was the low and flat loading plan. Moreover it obtained a very important success from the manufacturers of mobil-home and to camp.

The market trend of end of the year 70 went rather towards the light vans (commercial vehicles with a payload from 300 to 400 kg) which represented the solution most interesting for transport in the urban areas and the interurban connections. In 1976 the total demand for light freight vehicles reaches the 300.000 units in Europe.

FIAT answers this request with the 127 Fiorino. FIAT chooses the car more sold in Europe, FIAT 127 and, by maintaining intact all the mechanical characteristics and with comfort which made its success of them, equipped it with a volume of loading of 360 kg. The FIAT 127 Fiorino was the first light van produced in Italy, but it was even the last arrival in the European market. It thus synthesized all the advantages of FIAT 127, sold to several million specimens in Europe, and took account of the defects or lacks of the competitor vehicles while offering in more one spoiler, a stall wall of the cabin and the posterior doors blocables in position open to 90°. Among the great innovations of 1978 it there with the new range FIAT 238E and its Panorama version which one can define as a car in 9 places. The 238E Panorama was the ideal vehicle for the inns, the companies of hiring of cars, the communities and the groups sporting.

The Doblò, manufactured in Turkey and to Brazil, was launched in 2000 to Italy and in 2001 in the other countries of Europe, he will be quickly a considerable success. In 2000 FIAT develops the concept of the record player - born in 1981 with the 127 Fiorino - with the Strada, record player of the family Palio.
