The “Lorraine University Stage”, founded general sports club in 1901, had the appearance of an outsider as regards football vis-a-vis the other clubs of the city. Its results are modest besides before the Great War. Completed war, the SUL, which recruits mainly its players in academic world, becomes an ambitious club. Better illustration of this new frame of mind, the president Marcel Picot obtains the operational startup of an enclosure worthy of this name on a ground of the University. The “stage of the Park of the Sports of the Bridge of Essey” (sometimes called “stage of the University”) is inaugurated the September 12th 1922. During work (season 21-22), the SUL evolves/moves on the ground of the US Border (Drouot stage). In spring 1935, the Lorraine University Stage evolves/moves in Promotion of Honor to the great despair of its supporters. Auguste “Napoleon” Schalbar then conducts campaign to create a professional section within the SUL In spite of many difficulties, his file is accepted the May 20th 1935. Nancy will have a professional team since 1935 - 1936. The adopted name is “Football Club of Nancy”.
The disastrous reform of colonel Pascot dispossesses the FCN of its pro team in 1943. The club changes even name to adopt that of “Lorraine Stage”. A federal team of “Nancy-Lorraine” is then installation in the city nancéienne. She is pressed in fact mainly on players sochaliens… This formation “nancéienne” astonishes and removes the Coupe de France 1944. This trophy remains in Nancy in the window of the hatter Marcel Picot, always president of the Lorraine Stage/FC Nancy. The FCN quickly finds a normal face as of the summer 1944 but takes again its place among the pros and his name of FC Nancy only in 1945, the competitions being impossible in Lorraine because of the engagements. The Coupe de France 1944-1945 makes it possible however Nancy to reach the eighth of finale (demolished 10-0 vis-a-vis RC Lens).
Roger Piantoni joined Nancy in July 1950. It is 19 years old. In seven seasons with the FCN, it registers 92 goals in championship, gaining the title of better striker of D1 since 1951 (28 goals).
Already semi-finalist in 1948 and 51, Nancy reaches the final of the Coupe de France 1953 with the favor of a lenient drawing lot. Lille is given favorite but sorrow vis-a-vis the Lorraine ones. At ten minutes of the final whistle, the decision is not made yet, Lorraine Belaid having equalized (41e) after the opening of the score inhabitant of Lille by Vincent (17th). Alas, the Lefèvre Mastiff finds the fault with the 81e minute, destroying the Nancy hopes. The FCN remains however one of the very best French formations. Excellent illustration of this new statute, splendid victory 4-2 with the stage Chamartin vis-a-vis the Real Madrid.
In spite of a news beautiful countryside in Coupe de France which leads the Nancy ones in semi-finals, the financial requirements force the club to yield in 1957, against 25 million, Piantoni with the Stade of Rheims. Leon Deladerière, international winger, is transferred the following season. Thus dismantling its superb left wing, Nancy is not long in falling in D2 after 11 consecutive seasons among the elite. One period of turbulences then marks the club which connects gone up and descents.
In 1962, however, the FCN seems given on right tracks. Charles Boileau is from now on president. The maintenance among the elite is finally assured, the FCN obtaining even an excellent 4th place. Always in 1962, new nancéienne participation in the finale of the Coupe de France after a delicate course, Nancy having to eliminate Rheims and Metz. Only 30.401 spectators are listed with Colombes, competition tele obliges, including more than 12.000 coming from Lorraine. In spite of this support, Saint-Etienne is essential, following a goal of Baulu. The Lorraine ones were however given largely favorite vis-a-vis the Greens, relegated in D2.
The Red and White know one season 1962 - 1963 catastrophic which replonge the club in Division 2. The average of spectators falls dangerously with a few 5000 units, putting in danger the perenniality of the club. In spite of this concern, the “Park of the Sports of the Bridge of Essey”, renamed Stage Marcel Barb, is equipped with installations to evolve/move into night. These projectors are financed by the municipality.
The season 1963 - 1964 sees the anguish of the FCN which is trailed in bottom of table of D2. The stage Marcel-Barb is deserted by the public; 873 spectators attend the ultimate meeting in residence this season. “Each month, we lost a million” explains Charles Boileau who prefers “to draw a feature”. It is the abandonment of the statute pro. One will vilify a long time the municipality in Nancy, shown to have let die the club without reacting. It is too late… Setting out again in CFA, them from now on amateurs of the FCN cannot there be maintained. In June 1965, the new one falls: the club stops its activities definitively.
