Făgăraş
Făgăraş (in Hungarian Fogaras , in German Fogarasch ) is a town of Transylvania in Romania, in the Judeţ de Braşov having the title of Municipe just as Braşov. It counted 34.034 inhabitants in 2005.
It is historically the municipe (local center administrative) Rumanian, whereas Braşov was a municipe Saxon and multi-ethnic same Judeţ, which explains the fact that there are two municipes for this Judeţ but only Braşov is considered chief town.
Located on the road leading of Braşov to Sibiu, she played an important strategic part, in particular because of sound strong castle. Between the two world wars, Făgăraş was the chief town of the judeţ of Făgăraş.

Geographical coordinates
The town of Făgăraş is located in the central part of the depression of the same name. The city is crossed, from the east towards the west, by the river Olt, one of the principal affluents of the the Danube.
Altitude is located between 424 and 441 meters.
The localities bordering are the Mândra village (in the east), the Beclean village (in the west), the Râuşor villages, Ileni and Hurez (in the south) and the villages Şona, Felmer, Şoarş and Calbor (in north).
Climate
The annual average temperature of Făgăraş is of 8,2˚C. The lowest average temperature is of -4,6˚C (in January) and the highest average temperature (in July) is of 18,7˚C.
The highest temperature of Făgăraş was recorded the September 9th 1946: 38,9˚C, and the lowest temperature was recorded the January 13rd 1943: -33,8˚C.
The night gel is very frequent: 137,8 jours/an, from September to May. The prevalent winds are west towards the east. Precipitations vary between 600 and 800 mm/an, the known maximum is 1.166 mm in 1912 and the minimum is of 370,3 mm in 1945.
Transport
The railroad Bucharest - Braşov - Sibiu - Arad passes by the south of the locality. The station of Făgăraş of the Rumanian railroads is with 238,4 kilometers of Bucharest.
On the European road E68 (trunk road DN1), the town of Făgăraş is with 66 kilometers of the chief town city of the judeţ (department) of Braşov and with 76 kilometers of Sibiu. Other tarred roads lead to Rupea and Sighişoara (towards north), to Sebeş or Recea (towards the south).
Demography
At the XVIIe century, the population of the borough was of 1500 - 2000 inhabitants; in 1733, its population counted 183 Rumanian families (some 900 hearts), in accordance with the results of conscriptiondemandée by the bishop gréco-catholic Ioan Inocenţiu Micu Klein. In 1869, the population of Făgăraş was of 4.816 inhabitants, in 1881 of 5.307 inhabitants, in 1910 of 6.579 inhabitants. In accordance with the data of the census of the 1930, the population of the city was of 11.841 inhabitants: Rumanian , German Hungarian, , Jewish , etc From the point of view of their religious confessions, in 1930, the inhabitants of Făgăraş were orthodoxe (34, 9%), Gréco-catholics (19,7%), reformed (14,4%), romano-catholics (13,5%), Luthériens (9,9%), mosaic (4,9%), unitarian (2,3%), etc In 1949, the population of the city was of 9.296 inhabitants. In 1977, the population of the city was of 33.600 inhabitants, in 1979, it was of more than 38.000 inhabitants and in 2002, of 35.759 inhabitants.

Tourism

the strong castle of Făgăraş is the tourist main objective of the city. Its construction started towards the end of XIVe century, on the place of a ground fortress dating from XIIe century. In XVIe centuries, the castle was transformed into strong Château and, at the XVIIe century, it became princely residence. Between the two world wars, the castle was used as military garrison and, during the first part of the communist time, until into 1964 in particular, the castle was transformed into prison.
