Félicien Rops
Félicien Rops (Namur the July 7th 1833 - Essonnes the August 23rd 1898) is a Belgian artist , painter, Lithographe, Dessinateur, Illustrateur and engraver.
After a first career of caricaturist, it illustrates in particular the books of his friend Charles De Coster of which the Légende and adventures of Uylenspiegel (1866).
Set on Botanical, it devotes to it in company of the French editor Malassis Auguste-Chicken, exiled in Brussels of September 1863 in May 1871. For this one, it carries out the frontispieces of the Bas-fonds of the company of Henri Monnier (1864), of the Diable to the body of Andrea de Nerciat (1865), of the Épaves of Charles Baudelaire (1866), of the Jeunes France of Théophile Gautier (1866), of Gamiani of Alfred de Musset (1866) or of Point of following day of Alive Denon (1867).
Its engravings include/understand the Capital punishment , the Order reigns with Warsaw , the Medal of Waterloo , the Drinker of wormwood , the Strike , Pornokratès or Mors syphilitica .
Its success having brought it to Paris, it illustrates the writings of great authors there such Jules Barbey d' Aurevilly, Joséphin Péladan, Félicien Champsaur or Mallarmé. In spite of these references, it was left a long time in the shade, the érotisant character of part of its work carrying damage to him.
In 1857, he marries Charlotte Polet de Faveaux, girl of a Namurian lawyer. From this marriage will be born a son, Paul and a girl, Juliette, deceased in low age.
It is one of the founding members of the Groupe of the XX in 1883.
Its sight starts to lower in 1892. It preserves its literary relations until its death.
A museum is dedicated to him in its birthplace.
