Fårö
Rene Goscinny (August 14th, 1926 - November 5th, 1977) writer, humorist and scenario writer of Cartoon French, of Polish extraction. It is known universally for the albums of Astérix and Lucky Luke (character created by Morris, but to which Goscinny gave, as a scenario writer and gagman, a second breath). It is one of the French authors most read in the world: the whole of the cartoons and books which he wrote represents approximately 500 million sold works.
Youth
Rene Goscinny was born the August 14th 1926 with Paris, 42, rue du Fer- with-Mill, from Stanislaw “Simkha” Gościnny, chemical engineer of Warsaw, and Anna Bereśniak-Gościnna, Khodorkov (village maintaining in Ukraine). Stanislaw and Anna met with Paris, married in 1919 and had initially a first wire, Claude Goscinny, were born the December 10th 1920. Goscinny leave for Buenos Aires, in Argentine, two years after the birth of Rene, following the new post of chemical engineer that Stanislas finds over there. Rene has a happy childhood, studying in the French schools of the city. He spends his summer holidays in Uruguay, where he rides a horse on the Pampa. It with the practice to make laugh his/her classmates, probably to compensate for a natural timidity It starts to draw very early, inspired by the illustrated stories which it adores lira. In December 1943, after obtaining its diploma at 17 years, the Rene young person loses his father of the continuations of a Brain hemorrhage, and is seen obliged to seek a work. The following year, it obtains its first employment as accountant associated in a company of tires. He resigns shortly after to become draftsman in an advertizing agency. In parallel, it publishes its first texts and drawings in Latin Quarter , bulletin internal of the French college of Buenos Aires.
Rene, accompanied by his mother, leaves the Argentine for New York in 1945, in order to join his uncle Boris, the brother of his mother. Rene becomes translator in a firm of import-export while waiting to find a situation more stable. To escape the American military service, Rene leaves for France to join the French Army in 1946. He is used for Aubagne, in the 141e battalion of alpine infantry. Promoted corporal, Rene becomes the official illustrator of the regiment, illustrating small and posters.
The first work
He illustrates then the book the girl with the eyes of gold and goes back to New York. Rene then crosses the most difficult period of his life. There remains one moment without employment, only and completely depressed (he will draw one from it from his percussion texts: Only, without friends, a penny… ).
In 1948, it finds a work in a small studio, collaborating with Harvey Kurtzman, Willy Elder, John Severin and Jack Davis in the team of Mad magazine. Contrary to the prototype of the American Dream, it will be the only one of this team to build a fortune… while going to settle in France!
Rene becomes then artistic director with Kunen Publishers where he writes four books for children. In 1949, it meets, thanks to Jijé, Maurice de Bévère alias Morris, the Dessinateur and first author of the series of albums “Lucky Luke”.
Return to Paris
Then it meets Georges Troisfontaines, director of World Close agency, which convinces it to go back to Paris to work as director of the local antenna in 1951. It meets there Albert Uderzo, with which it begins a long co-operation. They work together on Bonnes Evenings , a female magazine for which Goscinny written Sylvie .
In 1955, Goscinny accompanied by Jean-Michel Charlier, Albert Uderzo and Jean Hébrad, found the trade union of Edipress/Edifrance edition. Goscinny and Uderzo also cooperate on Bill Blanchart in Jeannot, Pistolet in Pistolin and Benjamin and Benjamine in the magazine of the same name. Under the pseudonym of Agostini, Goscinny written to Small Nicolas for Jean-Jacques Sempé in the Mosquito and later South-western then Pilot .
the Newspaper of Tintin
In 1956, Goscinny starts a profitable collaboration with the Newspaper of Tintin. He collaborates with many authors:
- Chick and Poussif , with some " Al Uderzo " ;
- short Stories for OJ Angenot and Albert Weinberg;
- Signor Spaghetti with Dino Attanasio;
- Mr Tric with Bob De Moor;
- Prudence Petitpas with Maurice Marshal;
- Globul the Martian and Alphonse with Tibet;
- Modeste and Pompon with Andre Franquin;
- Folding seat with Berck;
- Oumpah-Pah with Albert Uderzo of 1958 with 1962.
In complement, Goscinny takes part in the magazine Paris-Flirt and collaborates with Morris on Lucky Luke (1955 - 1977).
Pilot and Astérix
In 1959, the Édifrance/Édipresse editions launch the magazine Pilote. Goscinny becomes one of the most productive writers for the magazine. In the first edition, it launches its more famous creation, Astérix the Gallic, with Uderzo.It makes Pilote a magazine for teenagers, publishing more inventive and released cartoons that those of the press for children.
Goscinny also takes again the writing of the Petit Nicolas and Jehan Pistolet , now called Jehan Soupolet .
Pilot is bought by Georges Dargaud in 1960. Goscinny will be the editor association of 1963 with 1974. It begins new series:
- Divagations of Mr Know-All with Martial;
- Potachologie Illustrated and the Schoolkid is served with Cabu;
- the Dingodossiers with Gotlib of 1965 with 1967;
- the Forest of Chênebeau with Mic Delinx;
- Iznogoud with Jean Tabary of 1962 with 1977. This series was started in the magazine Record under the name of the Aventures of the caliph Haroun-el-Poussah .
It Marie with Gilberte Pollaro-Millo in 1967. In 1968 is born his/her daughter Anne, become writer.
Goscinny dies of an cardiac arrest the November 5th 1977 at the 51 years age during a test of effort of routine to the private clinic of the street of Chazelles with Paris. Uderzo will continue Astérix by signing by respect for its memory the albums of their two names.
Rewards
- In 1964, it receives the Prix Alphonse Allais of humor, for Small Nicolas and the buddies , appeared the previous year.
- Named Knight of Arts and Letters by the French government in 1967.
- Named Knight of the National order of the Merit .
Anecdotes
- Goscinny was also scenario writer and draftsman Capitaine Bibobu , series published in 1955 in the transitory weekly magazine colors with the format newspaper “Dare-devil” (whose editor association, Claude Moine , will know a greater success under the name of Eddy Mitchell).
