History

The saint founder

Psalmet would have been born at the 6th century, in Ireland, and had as a tutor the saint Brandan abbot. Seeking loneliness, they decided to leave on a boat and wet in a port of Saintonge where they were accepted by the happy Leonce. There, Psalmet did as well miracles as the reputation as it had acquired harmed its attraction for loneliness and the hidden life. It left for the the Limousin and stopped in a deserted place, close to Eymoutiers, then settled in Grigeas in a thick forest. A wolf ate the ass which carried its burdens to him and the saint ordered with the wild animal to replace the ass in his work. Psalmet recited all the psautier and requested whole nights from where the name which was given to him. It delivered a man of a snake which it had swallowed, returned the sight to a woman, cures the girl of the duke of Aquitaine of the venom of a grass snake which had bitten it and made many other miracles. The pilgrims flowed and Psalmet, to find its quietude, obtained from God that it withdrew this capacity to him, then it requested until his death, towards 630. With its death, it was buried on the edges of the Vienna and on its tomb a small church was built, served by a monastery of canon. “This monastery was with the foot of the hill” i.e. “Ayen-moutiers” or “Aymoutiers” which gave Eymoutiers.

A true small “city”

Around the monastery a core develops. This one quickly becomes the stronghold of the bishop of Limoges, which made there build a castle (disappeared today). In 1428, Eymoutiers receives from the bishop, their sovereign, his charter of stamping. Thus free and independent, a wall is built surrounding the city. The latter will be entirely destroyed, due partly to the wars of religion. Indeed Eymoutiers was one of the principal places calvinists of the Limousin. In 1629, the convent of the Ursulines is installed in Eymoutiers on the order of Monseigneur François of Fayette. One devotes oneself to it to the education of the young girls. With regard to the boys, it was necessary to await 1778 and the construction of the college of boys by Monseigneur Louis de Plessis d' Argentré.

The capital of the tannery limousine

As from the 11th century, in Eymoutiers the corporation of the tanners develops; manufacturers of leather makes starting from skins and of tan, bark of oak and chestnut crushed. It is from there that the inhabitants of Eymoutiers hold their name: pelauds (those which peel the skin). This craft industry knew its apogee at the 18th century (one counted twenty tanneries with Eymoutiers in 1628). They all were installed in edges of Vienna. The “tanateurs” benefitted from a large local production of bovines providing a raw material of good quality and from a pure water, noncalcareous to make reverdir the skins after drying. The skins were used on the spot in saddlery and the shoe, the remainder of the production was sold in all Limousin. One dispatched in the area of Lyon and Grenoble of the raw hides of goats and kids. The houses of the tanners had attics with open-type screen used for the drying of the skins. But as these surfaces quickly proved to be insufficient, it was necessary to equip with the same system of many houses of the borough. Some of these attics still remain, giving a seal particular to our old houses. A mill with barks will be built close to the bridge of Peyrat. It will be used to reduce out of powder the barks of oak and chestnut in order to obtain the tan used in the treatment of leather. At the 17th century thus, this flourishing activity occupied a considerable number of workmen. The “tanadours” and “couréadours” of Eymoutiers quickly gathered as a brotherhood. This brotherhood had an especially religious vocation, making celebrate masses, dealing of the poor and the disabled person of the trade. But the brothers did not forget the temporal one and the statutes envisaged to five annual banquets! Right compensation vis-a-vis the rigors of this trade. They always worked the hands in water, salt and the tan; the skins dried the winter in these opened attics, the cold thus invaded the houses without speaking about the strong odor which was to reign there.

Second world war

March 13rd 1943, decided and carried out by Georges Guingouin, an action, preferred with a simple reparable easy derailment, will be the destruction of the Viaduc of Bussy-Varache on the railway Limoges - Ussel, obliging with a transshipment until the Libération. Bright proof of the existence of a offensive Maquis in the Limousin.
