History
The origin of the name: The name “Aiben” is the first to be appeared in the files, around from 1100. Ebent, Ayben (and its Latin variations will follow), Aybenco, Eyben and others still.Eybens is essential finally only on XVIe century. There to date does not exist any certainty as for the origin of this name. It seems however which it is related to water if one refers to the two assumptions which appear most plausible.
The first convenes prefix AI (derivative of the Gallic equo: water) and the suffix Benc (place). Eybens would be thus “the places of water, because of the many marshes that there was at this place formerly” according to André Plank.
The second assumption is pressed on former French “Ebee”, valve of the mill, or " Ebe" , backward flow, lock, outfall. It would be necessary to attach this assumption to Verderet, on the course of which several mills were installed.
The origin of the armorial bearings: It is about the blazon of azure in the middle of gold, surmounted of a money dove which holds of its nozzle an olive branch.
These armorial bearings appear in the middle of the XVIIe century, with the arrival of the family of Surville to the head of the Seigniory of Eybens. This blazon was conceded in Jean de Surville during his ennoblement by Christine of Savoy in 1642.
If the family of Surville is erased local history later one century, its blazon will reconsider the front of the scene eybinoise. Indeed, on September 28th, 1960, the Municipal council chooses it for communal armorial bearings.
First known mention of the church of Eybens date completion of XIe century. It is specified in a document its income (12 sums of money) which is in the higher average of the parishes of the sector.
Later, from the documents of XVe teach us that this place of worship is dedicated to Saint Christophe. He is also specified there that the eybinnois have a devotion particular for a cross installed inside the building. A meticulous description of this church is given to us at the time of the visit of a bishop of Grenoble, in 1767. It is retranscribed in the report which follows, of which here some extracts: " (...) 8 measuring apparatuses of length on 3,5 of width, lambrifiée and paved, half molasse, half boards in good state, and covered with tiles. A platform is with the top of the door where the penitent ones make their office. Two benches are quoted: that pertaining to the Lord Clet and another with Mister d' Agoult. (...) The bell-tower is located at the entry of the church, made in the shape of square tower finishing out of covered slate arrow where two bells are attached. The cemetery surrounds the église".
After the Revolution the church is used for the audiences of the Justice of the Peace of the canton, the presbytery is transformed into prison and the sacristy is used for the conservation of the communal records! This profane use of the church will cause many polemics and will not last. Vis-a-vis important renovation works which become necessary and to the lack of places inside, it will be a question of increasing or of rebuilding the church at the beginning of the XIXe century.
