Extremely of Cop
The fort of Cop is a military fortification which belongs to the second great system of fortifications, after that of Vauban, places at detached forts, built in France between 1874 and 1885 by the director of the Genious, the general Séré de Rivières.
The Fort of Cop, or Strong Plunders, belonged to the supposed glacis to prohibit the access to Paris, following the example other forts of the Laonnois, such those of Bruyères, Montbérault or Mons…. This whole of fortifications answers the need for improving defense of the new borders the shortly after the defeat of 1870. It is built on the heights of the junction between the valleys of the Aisne and the Vesle on the communes of Cop-on-Aisne and Chivres-Valley. In 1885, two companies of the 67e regiment of infantry (500 men) come to hold garrison to with it. Unfortunately, progress of the armament made it obsolete before even its final startup. It then became a simple place of quartering for the army. The fort covers 13 hectares and can accommodate to 650 men including 20 officers. An infirmary can shelter 80 patients. The stable is planned for 12 horses; stores with powder and ammunition, a forging mill a workshop with wood and two wells occupy the other suitable parts.
Its situation very close to the Chemin of the Ladies made of him a place trè coveted by the French Armies and allemande who disputed it during the four years of the First World War.
The 20th century was then marked by the abandonment of the fort which was used only as center of désobusage until it is repurchased by the commune of Chivres-Valley (of which share the access road) which now mainly restored it with the assistance of the local government agencies. It is from now on a site which gathers various demonstrations on the craft industry or the representations of spectacles of sound and lights as well as theater.
Since 2001 the Fort of Cop is registered with the additional inventory of the Historic buildings.
