Fort like death is the Romance fifth of Guy of Maupassant, published in 1889. Its title is drawn from the Cantique of the canticles : “The love is strong like death, and the jealousy is hard like the sepulchre. ”

Summary

Olivier Bertin, famous painter, fall in love with Year from Guilleroy, girl of his former mistress, Anne. The growing old artist finds in the girl the mother whom he knew young person. This platonic passion brings Bertin and its Anne friend to be reflected on the escape of time and the forfeiture. Work is completed on the accidental death of the painter.

Adaptations

Very “mélo”, regarded as close relation of the writings of Paul Le Bourget, Fort like death gave place to only one televised adaptation, with Michel Vitold (Bertin) and Marina Vlady (Anne de Guilleroy).
