The WWE acquired the Extreme Championship Wrestling and all its video library in 2003 and later started to reintroduce the ECW through a series of DVD and books. The best example is that of The Rise and Fall off ECW , documentary (and later a book) on the history of the federation. The enormous popularity generated around all these goods of the ECW, led the WWE first of all to create according to the suggestion of Rob Van Damm a Pay per view homage to the ECW in 2005 and which would be called ECW One Night Stand. The success not only financial but so critical of the show, justified the WWE to organize second One Night Stand the following year. With this renewed interest on the ECW, the WWE started to explore the possibility of making revive the full-time federation.

The May 26th 2006, the WWE announced the return of the ECW as a division of the federation which would be a complement of RAW and of SmackDown!, and which will be diffused every week on Sci Fi Chanel with the the United States. In spite of the fact that professional wrestling would be badly accepted on SciFi by its televiewers, its president Bonnie Hammer believed that the ECW went booster rocket the set of themes of the chain which is concentrated in imagination. SciFi Chanel is held by NBC Universal, owner of the USA Network and official diffuser of the programs of the WWE on the cable.

To increase the success of the new division, the ECW was promoted especially in the various programs of the WWE in the neighborhoods of One Night Stand. A special show of the name of WWE vs ECW Head to Head was organized besides on the USA Network as a part of promotion.

The division of the ECW at the beginning was to be different it even from other promotions of the WWE. The cameras were placed in a different place and the apron of the boxing ring had a logo " ECW". The all-in wrestlers were called " Extremists" and thus opposed to Superstars, and the catcheuses ones were called " Vixens" in oppositions to the Divas. These special terms were abandoned thereafter.

The division of the ECW put at the origin with the poster the originals of the ECW like Rob Van Damm, Sabu, Tommy Dreamer, Balls Mahoney, Al Snow and The Sandman, with the former owner of the ECW Paul Heyman and new the " rebelles" ECW like Kurt Angle and the Big Show. However, after the second episode, the role of Heyman was of a part reduced. According to an interview in the English newspaper The Sun, Heyman wrote scripts of the show every week, and then Vince McMahon kept the final decision. After the Pay per view December to Dismember 2006, Heyman was congédié of its position of director of division ECW, after the bitter failure which was this show with rates of purchases which reached a historically low level for the federation.

Behind the scene, Dave Lagana, former script writer as a chief of SmackDown! today replaced Heyman as a script writer as a chief of ECW.Et aujour' of it is Armando Alejandro Estrada which is general manager.

Changes were made with the division which became completely different from the original federation, in particular the change of the rules in promotion - where the weapons were legal in all the matches and which they did not have there calculations outside or disqualifications. The WWE classified these matches of " Extreme Rules " , and became from now on occasional.
