Experimental ecological reserve of Me bour
The experimental ecological Réserve of Me bour is a natural reserve of the Senegal, located near the town of Me bour.
History
In 1947, ORSTOM installed beside Me bour a geophysical observatory intended for the observation of the seismic activity. In order to avoid the disturbance of the seismic and magnetic recordings, the station was surrounded by a perimeter of protection including the backwater of Mbaling. In 1975, an antenna of the Service of the Météorologie Nationale was built there.
In 1984, the ORSTOM equipped the station with a laboratory of Ornithologie and Mammalogie.
The site is entirely protected since 1987.
Characteristics
The reserve, made up of a shrubby Savanna, a backwater-lagoon and Atlantic littoral, represents a small-scale model of ecosystem coastal, favourable with the observation and interdisciplinary research. On the 630 species of birds present at Senegal, approximately 400 can be observed with Me bour.
Tourism and pedagogy
An ecological path was arranged between 1993 and 1996 and was opened to the public in 1997. It is equipped with a Arboretum and an artificial water point which attracts many species of birds and mammals. The path was supplemented in 2001 by one écomusée.
These infrastructures accommodate a varied public, in particular school. The reserve constitutes also a privileged place of research and formation for the students.
