The exophtalmy (or proptose ) is a former extrusion of the eye out of the orbit. The exophtalmy can be either bilateral (as that meets in the event of Maladie of Serious-Basedow) or unilateral (as in the event of tumor of the orbit). A measurement of the degree of exophtalmy can be realized by means of a Exophtalmomètre. A dislocation complete or partial of the orbit is also possible because of traumatism or of the swelling of fabrics surrounding the traumatism.

In the event of Maladie of Serious-Basedow, the displacement of the eye is with the widening of the muscles extra-eyepieces what can be visualized by a Tomodensitométrie or a IRM.

An untreated exophtalmy can prevent the closing of the eyelids during the sleep what, in its turn, can involve damage with the Cornée. The process which causes the displacement of the eye can also compress the Optical nerve or the ophthalmic Artère, which can involve the Cécité.
