Excursion in roller

The Randonnée is the most widespread practice of the users of the roller. It consists of simple walks, without competitive spirit, generally in urban environment, but also in the countryside along cycle tracks, even on the roads when there do not exist arranged ways.

The great excursion is an extreme alternative which consists in traversing important distances from city to city, in one or more days. When the course is carried out in a reduced time (a few days with more), it is called also raid in roller. Since the beginning of the century, some skaters thus crossed the world. These last years, this practice experienced a certain development, particularly in France.

The majority of the practitioners of the excursion in roller only evolve/move or in small groups, nevertheless, since the medium of the Années 1990, the popular excursions gathering several thousands of participants are a success growing in the big cities.

History of the popular excursions

In the beginning, such excursions gathered a small number of motivated skaters, certain evenings of week, in particular with Paris, where the first association of hikers with roller was born.

The success of the formula caused followers in other cities, then the movement was structured, independently of the official authorities of the sporting roller.

Organization of the popular excursions

The framed excursions are it generally by the voluntary ones, that one usually calls staffeurs (Anglicism). They are identifiable with their tee-shirts or chasubles of bright color (yellow canary in Paris). A motorized vehicle can also accompany the excursion for a better indication.

So that the excursion proceeds under good conditions, the framing blocks the service roads time that the whole of the skaters passes, which generates sometimes conflicts with the motorists. The most organized teams have equipment of communication dedicated (Talkie-walkie) to maintain the cohesion of the procession. The principal risks are in the passage of roundabouts in which it is necessary to block all the vehicles in order to ensure the safety of the hikers. The indication of the dangers within the group is done by all the participants while raising the hands: a raised hand announces a danger/obstacle on the same side; the two raised hands announce a deceleration or a danger in front; the two hands raised and crossed above the head require a dead halt. By practice, at the time of important excursions, a space is reserved on the left of the group to make it possible the staffeurs to go up the excursion. Within the framework of declared excursions, the skaters must remain on the roadway and not borrow the pavements nor the way in misconception.

The framing can, when an agreement was concluded with the authorities, have a police escort (motorized or not, even in roller with Paris).

First of all, it is necessary to envisage the course which will be carried out. This forecast is generally done on chart, but can sometimes be carried out directly on the ground. A preliminary recognition makes it possible to check that the encountered difficulties will not be transformed into danger at the time of the passage of the procession. It is necessary also to regularly check work to be sure that the roads will not be cut.

Associations which organize the excursions are responsible legally and penally procession and people who composes it. It is thus necessary for those to contract an insurance.

As these demonstrations imply the displacement of a great number of people, it is necessary to prevent the authorities: it is necessary to contact all the town halls of the common crossings, the prefectures of the departments. It is also necessary to think of contacting the police force and/or the gendarmerie according to the crossed zones. A time which can go up to one month in advance is necessary to make these requests.

Costs of the organized excursions

Taking into account the obligations of associations with respect to the participants, the organization of excursions has a considerable cost. The ordinary expenditure includes/understands the insurance, the helps, the sytèmes of safety, the end cars…

In 2006, the cost of a great Parisian weekly excursion perhaps evaluated with approximately 6000 € per annum (insurance, vehicles of help, walkie-talkies and equipment of the team of framing).
