Von Kleist studied the right and mathematics with Königsberg, then entered in 1736, with the military service of the Denmark where he became officer in 1736. Pointed out in Prussia by the king Frederic Large the in 1740, it was named lieutenant in a posted regiment with Potsdam, where it became acquainted with Gleim, which interested it in poetry.
It made several campaigns with distinction, under and, passing by the various ranks, remained in cities or it bound with the poets distinguished from the time, Lessing, Weiße, etc It died, of the continuations of a wound received with the battle of Kunersdorf.
Carried by temperament with the melancholy, Kleist was preserved sentimentality by the military life. Its compatriots recognize a superiority in lyric poetry to him. He wrote with a large variety of Rythme S and of Sentiment S, warlike Ode S, Hymne S religious, reduced S in love, light songs, epigram S, etc One knows especially his descriptive poem, der Frühling ( Spring , 1749), which, following Schiller, is remarkable, in the parts Lyrique S, by the personal, but very poor feeling under the report/ratio of the invention. It was translated into French by Hubert (1766), by Béguelin (1788) and by Sarrazin (1802).
One still has of Kleist of the Fable S, of the Conte S, the Idylle S, a test of poem epic: Cissides and Paches , which one quotes beautiful episode S, finally a Tragédie, Sénèque , which does not miss a eloquence . Its Œuvres was published with corrections by Ramler ( Sämmtliche Werke ; Berlin, 1760, 2 vol.), and with more fidelity by W. Körte (ibid, 1803. 2 vol.).
