Evolution (software)

Evolution (or Novell Evolution , in the past Ximian Evolution ) is a free Logiciel of Groupware, it belongs to the project GNOME since version 2.8. It is used as Client of transport, address book, diary, gate of information.

Its user interface and its functionality are similar to Microsoft Outlook. It has some functionalities which distinguish it: indexing of the arriving text of all the emails, and a functionality of " Files virtuels" (they are saved research which resembles files of normal emails).

Evolution can be connected to a waiter Microsoft Exchange by using its Web interface and a plugin of Evolution called connector. By using gnome-pile it can be synchronized with Palm Pilot and Multisync makes it possible to synchronize it with cellphones and other PDAs.

History

Initially developed under the name Evolution by Ximian which was repurchased by Novell in 2003, it was called Novell Evolution . before becoming again Evolution for its release and its integration with the gnome project.

Evolution 2

Evolution 2 available since September 2004, comprises important news functionalities:

  • connectivity integrated with Novell GroupWise

  • connectivity integrated with Microsoft Exchange
  • support out-line improved for the accounts IMAP
  • many evolutions of the calendar
  • support of S/MIME, management of the contacts improved
  • integration of Gaim
  • integration improved at the Office
  • conformity increased with the human directives of interface of GNOME
  • functionality Spamassassin integrated (with level of spam and rules defined by the user in ~/.spamassassin/)

Evolution for Windows

In January 2005, Nat Friedman of Novell announces in its Blog that the company engaged Tor " tml" Lillqvist, the Finnish programmer who carried GIMP on Microsoft Windows, to make the same thing with Evolution. There exists today a installor under Windows for version 2.6.2 of Evolution realized by Marc Pinto starting from the bearing of Tor Lillqvist.

Before this advertisement, several projects having the same goal had started (Evolution for Windows for most known), but none of them left version alpha.
