Évolution is a Romance of Stephen Baxter reporting a possible scenario of the evolution of the mankind. It goes from - 65 to + 500 million years.

The novel cuts out in a series of small accounts spaced of a few thousands to several hundreds of million years.

Atmosphere of the novel

Stephen Baxter imagines stories being held in prehistoric executives and histories which we know. He imagines situations of fiction which could or which will be able to occur.

The commonly allowed scientific theories do not prohibit them, but they are of course fictions, inter alia:

- The " cachalot" flying; left alive ptérodactyle in the high layers of the atmosphere and never not going down again to ground, nourishing micro-organisms.

- Sufficiently intelligent dinosaurs to build tools and to have a rudimentary social communication.

- men of Néandertal reduced in slavery by the Homo-sapiens.

- Rats of the future having evolved/moved into frightening predatory.

He imagines also some " premières" Human History: first human being giving themselves a name, the invention of the religion, the first crime and even… introduction of the first political terror, during prehistory - the chapter " Mère" -.

Place in the literature

The human being, his ancestors and his descendants are described like often miserable beings, fighting for their survival, sometimes violent one.

One is with thousand miles of the Mythe of the good savage of Rousseau.
