Evangelion
Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン, Shinseiki Evangelion , often known under its international title Neon Genesis Evangelion ) is a Anime Japanese (also adapted in Manga). Animates is realized by Hideaki Anno Studio Gainax, it is composed of a series TV of 26 episodes, and 2 films. The series, diffused in Japan between 1995 and 1996, was immediately a great success and unchained passions, considered for the high-quality of its animation and its scenario alambiqué (which still did not reveal all its secrecies, even a long time after the oddment). Starting as a series of Matched traditional, Evangelion surprises while venturing in introspection and philosophy, topics until there rather rare in animation. The series will have been voted by plebiscite as much for its large scenes of actions (sometimes very bloody) that for its réflexions. In the Japanese magazine Newtype of the month of October 2006, Rebuild off Evangelion ( Evangelion Shin Gekijōban ) is announced: it is about a series of four films presenting a version improved of the series TV, with much of new contents. The first film is planned for on September 1st, 2007 in the Japanese cinemas.
Etymology of the title
- 新世紀エヴァンゲリオン : Titrate in Japanese. The Kanji 新 ( Shin ) means “new” and the kanji 世紀 ( Seiki ) mean “century”. The Katakana エヴァンゲリオン (deliveries E-van-ford-laughed-one) are the Japanese transcription of the Western word Evangelion. the title is thus made up of two parts, one kanji which means “New century”, the other in katakana, " Evangelion". What places the series within the framework of a revival (the series is within an post-apocalyptic framework, at the dawn of a “new century” where humanity overcame wild nature and lives in a new environment of ultra-sophisticated technology). The word Evangelion is attached to the Gospel, and is a means for the authors of announcing one of the topics of the series, the religion (used only as a pretext) and the relationship of human with the state of divinité. In the series, this title appears in the credits of opening.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion : It is a title entirely in Greek. The word Neon comes from νέον (neutral form of the word Neos , νέος) and means “new”. Genesis comes from γένεσις, the “beginning” (in French, the word gave Genèse). Evangelion comes from ευαγγέλιον ( Euaggelion , marked have-ang-guél'-II one), it means “good news” and was employed by Jesus to qualify his message carrying the advertisement of the reign of God (the word gave in French Évangile). the series is thus placed under the optics of a " new commencement" where humanity overcomes a cataclysm. Neon Genesis Evangelion is the international title of the series, chosen by the Gainax itself for out-Japan export. It has almost the same significance as the Japanese title. It appears in the Eyecatch in medium of episode.
The arrival of Evangelion in France
- In 1996, the series beats full sound in Japan, the video editor Dynamic Visions (Franco-Belgian agent of the Japanese company Dynamic Planning) is interested closely and buys in it the rights of the series in 1997.
- In 1997, Dynamic Visions begins the edition of the series in 9 VHS, French subtitled original version (VOSTF), which will be a success in the experts. In parallel, the series is diffused on television for the first time, on the cabled chain C: (become Range One thereafter), always in VOSTF.
- As from February 1998, the editor of cartoons Glénat, publishes the manga Evangelion translated into French.
- At the end of 1998, the encrypted chain Canal+ wishes to diffuse the series, and on this occasion, Dynamic Visions makes carry out a French doubling by the studio Chinkel. The series, for the first time in VF, was thus diffused on Canal+ between 1998 and 1999. This diffusion made it possible to popularize even more the series near the general public.
- In 2000 Dynamic Visions publishes last version VHS of the series in the shape of a box of 7 videos cassettes in French version.
- Between 1999 and 2003, the series (always in VF) was repeated on the cabled chains Mangas and AB1.
- Of 2002 to 2003, Dynamic Visions publishes the series into 6 DVD, in VOST and VF. This exit knew some engineering problems on volume 2, without speaking about the quality of image, already bad in VHS and thus definitely lower compared to the other series left in DVD. The license of the series had suddenly fallen the same year, and this edition DVD was thus produced only in very minor amount, quickly exhausted.
- In April 2002, the video editor Manga Vidéo (Anglo-American label distributed in France by Video Pathé) acquires the rights of 2 films of Evangelion, and publishes them in DVD, VF and VOSTF. This edition was very criticized, in particular because for the VF, Manga Vidéo did not employ the actors who had previously worked on the French doubling of the series TV, and for the VOSTF the translation and subtitling are of quite bad quality.
- In 2003, following several litigations, the firm Dynamic Planning separates from Dynamic Visions, and the first obliges the Franco-Belgian editor not to use the name " more; Dynamic". The editor thus changes his name into Dybex.
- In 2005, Dybex repurchases the rights of the Evangelion series, and in February 2006, they republish the preceding DVD of 2003 with the same image of bad quality.
- Dybex envisages, for during 2007, a new edition of Evangelion in DVD, it will use new bands, remasterized by the Gainax in 2003 for the exit of the DVD in Japan.
- In 2007, the series is again diffused on Mangas and AB1.
History

Fifteen years later, humanity overcame this event, called the Second Impact. But of mysterious named creatures Anges makes their appearance, and tries to destroy Tokyo-3, the new capital-fortress of the Japan, built after the Second Impact.
To fight them, the secret organization NERV developed an ultimate weapon, the “Evangelion” or “Eva”, controlled giant Robot anthropoïde.
Shinji Ikari, fourteen years, goes to Tokyo-3 on invitation of his/her father, whom it has not re-examined for his 3 years. It is far from suspecting that it will be implied in a conflict which could mean the end of humanity well no matter what it arrives…

General topics
The Religion
The spectators can find in the universe of Evangelion much of borrowed elements, inter alia, with the myths of the religion Judéo-chrétien, and with the Gnosticisme. Thus, the series puts in scene creatures named Ange S, a Adam, a Lilith, explosions which form cross. The credits of opening also show a Arbre of the Life (resulting from the Kabbale). Many people are brought to think that the religious over-representation in Evangelion has a significance, and many texts published by the fans on Internet place the religious aspect in the center of their analyzes, as if Evangelion were the animated adaptation of a crowned text.
However, an analysis of these characters carrying of the mythical names of beings, reveals that they do not have anything commun run with their equivalents of the texts and religious myths. The Angels, for example, defined in the Bible like envoys of God, are not nothing like it in the series: they seem a race, very near to the Homme but of which the genetic structure differs from 0,11%, fighting for the possession of planet. The series informs us besides that the Angels were born from Adam, but never in the crowned texts Adam did not generate angels. Adam d' Evangelion is not besides the parent of humanity, nor an envoy of God (but a come creature probably besides). As for God, his existence even implied forever in the world of Evangelion. Evangelion thus presents a melting-pot of religious and esoteric references, but without any coherence between the various concepts, and without common point (put aside names) with the crowned texts.
The “mystery” of the religion in Evangelion is explained by its creators, who were described in an interview in 2001: Evangelion does not have in fact any religious significance. There exists a multitude of series of Mecha in Japan, and equips it with Gainax wanted to give a savor very particular, and new, with its series. The Japanese are in majority Buddhist and shintoists, and know only very little the myths Judeo-Christians. The creators of Evangelion thus held there an excellent source of esoteric imagery and exotic which would poke the curiosity and the interest of the Japanese public. According to Kazuya Tsurumaki, assistant realizer, “the visual symbols of Christianity had the cool air” and it is the single reason for which they were selected. The various names and religious symbols only appear in fact to give a sufficiently innovative context to the series to be different from traditional from the kind and anything else. Hideaki Anno is not either Christian and its Evangelion series is not a proclamation in favor of Christianity. Tsurumaki entrusts besides that if they had known that the series would have such a success in occident, they would not have stressed the religious symbols.
The error would be thus all to see in Evangelion as if it were a counterpart of the Bible or other texts and myths religious, whereas this aspect is only one pretext, and that the true significances of Evangelion have nothing to do with the monk and are located at a level Psychologique and even Philosophique. Thus, for example, the third episode of the series takes again it the apologue of the hedgehogs developed by the German philosopher Schopenhauer in its work Parerga & Paralipomena . It is besides to note that this last presented always with regard to the Western religious dogmas a not dissimulated hostility which swears with the references previously quoted, but underlines well the variety of the sources from which have Pu to draw the scenario writers.
Evangelion: the controversy
Evangelion is a series which will have marked its time and which remains very known even 10 years after its realization, not only for its various qualities, but also for the rather violent reactions that it generated.
Thus the anger of a major part of the Japanese fans woke up, when, March 20th and 27th 1996, the last two episodes of the series were diffused for the first time. The critical terms that one often meets with regard to these episodes are: “incomprehensible”, “bâclé”, “except subject”, “no answer brings”… The fans most impassioned (to the extreme) by the series speak even about “treason”. What did it thus occur so that these episodes raise such an outcry?
This end is indeed diverting with the first access, since the 2 episodes are made up mainly of fixed plans, even of crayonnés for episode 26, and of monologs interminable and alambiqués between the main characters and their conscience. What puts them in margin of the series in itself, since the public awaited answers to the questions raised since the beginning, such as for example " from or the Angels come and which was them but" , " what wants really Seele" … However, with final nothing of all that, that obscure monologs. What thus generated the many protests and other emails of insults addressed to Gainax and Hideaki Anno, the " chef" of Evangelion.
Why did Hideaki Anno arrive from there at a result so far away from waitings of the public? Several reasons: first of all, starting from second half of the series, the production took much delay, the teams were exhausted and that felt in the quality of the episodes at certain times (the number of Celluloïd S carried out fell out of arrow). The original script of episode 25 that Anno and its team wrote, underwent the consequences of them and had to be abandoned: too much complexes and too expensive for a production overflowed by time and a restricted budget (script envisaged a gigantic and bloody battle between Asuka and an army of Eva Series). It is as to note as the series raised certain ethical questions, because several episodes showed very violent and bloody scenes. It is thus not improbable that the abandonment of the script of origin of episode 25 was facilitated by a frilosity of the various producers vis-a-vis the violence which it implied.
Hideaki was to thus find a new scenario for the end, and thus it benefitted from it to deliver a reflection which was expensive to him, a reflection on the world of animation and the world of the fans, even of the Otaku (old otaku itself, Anno was well placed to speak about the phenomenon. Of placed well as much than it is him which are regarded as the leader of the movement and this thanks to its two OAV Otaku video No and More Otaku Video No which was at their exit a plea for the acceptance of the otaku. Indeed it showed how a boy " normal" Otaku finished.). A reflection that few fans knew to locate. The table is simple: Anno, via its main character, Shinji Ikari, showed during all the series the image of the not very sure teenager of him vis-a-vis the passage at the adulthood, the too prompt teenager to flee lasts it reality while taking refuge in the fictitious world of Japanese animation. And now, it will help Shinji has to overcome its difficulties, it goes, as it is known as vulgarly, him “botter behind” so that Shinji carries out the true value of the life, and being done, Anno hopes to communicate the same feeling with these lost young people, these otakus, who water animated series (of which Evangelion). What could be to better speak with these young people whom the support to which they devote their life?
Throughout the last 2 episodes, one thus attends the voyage which Shinji achieves towards reality, Shinji which has each second, includes/understands a little more at which point it was in the error by fleeing the relations with the others. Each sentence is some directly addressed to the otakus. A second thumb your nose on behalf of Anno, will be to deliver this reflection in a very purified form, very far from the standards of animation, standards venerated by these " hordes" fans. Anno shows thus that one can not have a realization with the point of the technique, and for making a true cartoon as much. Anno had even briefly considered the idea simply to record its own voice.
All this thus has put out of them the fans, on the one hand because they “did quite simply not see” the message and felt betrayed not to have the awaited answers, on the other hand because those which included/understood did not accept the lesson given by Anno. The very mediatized and violent reaction of these fans shows has which Anno point had touched the sensitive cord, that there was a serious problem on the side of these fans who let themselves too much absorb by fictions. In the final analysis, all these protests made apparently only prove that it had raison.
But it is also useful to wonder which was the real relevance of this message, after 24 episodes of a series become traditional in the field of the shōnen (more particularly of the kind Mecha) but also Fan service with a whole gallery of sexy young girls (Gainax as Bandai did not hesitate besides has to exploit this field, by producing figurines enormously and of goodies showing the more or less stripped female characters of the series, and this same in 2005)… Of the topics very “otakuisants” all in all, without speaking owing to the fact that the members of the team of realization will have devoted at least 2 years of their life with this series, and that Hideaki Anno was not with its first attempt in the animated realization of series (and in 2003, it carried out film live of Cutey Honey, whose real interest, put aside to appease a passion of fan, seems non-existent). Would Anno have been hypocritical?
Always it is that after the realization of the last 2 episodes of the series in the studios of Gainax, it was quickly decided by Hideaki Anno (although it was fully satisfied with these the last two episodes) to remake episode 25 by using script initially envisaged, and to write a new end for episode 26. It was with the departure envisaged to leave these episodes remade with the video version the series TV, but the project, taking too much scale, became a film. Then the film, by lack of time, was divided into 2 films left in 4 months intervalle.
It should be noted that contrary to the spread ideas, episodes 25 and 26 were not remade because of the reactions of the fans, since the decision to remake them was made in-house in Gainax, before even as the episodes are not diffused for the first time on television.
But these films did not completely answer waitings, because even if this time, Hideaki Anno will have approached the aspect " first lecture" scenario and will have put in scene a final intrigue between Seele and Nerv (with grinds combat and revelations), these films do not remain less obscure about it and the majority of the awaited answers are not shown in a way as obvious as the public would have liked it. Anno also made use of the context of the series, to show in another form (directed " first lecture") the same message that he had addressed to the otakus at the time of the last episodes of the series (enough ironically, Anno even showed in an almost subliminal way, at the time of a scene, extracts of letters of insults sent by the fans). Even if it were completely of agreement to develop certain points of its scenario, Anno did not give up any for as much its ideas on the drifts of the “otakism”.
With final, these films, them, will have as divided the opinion (but in a way undoubtedly less violent as for the series), between the new raised questions but which will not find an answer, and elements which come to clear up obscure points of the series.
Video games derived from the series
The series Neon Genesis Evangelion having had the success which one knows, the editors of video games were not long in leaving the plays based on the license of the Gainax. The latter were carried out strictly for the Japanese market (they are thus not compatible with the European or American platforms) and are available in our regions only in importation. It is noted that the characters or the robots of Evangelion are present in certain plays without to be strictly devoted to the frankness. Thus they are very present in the series of the Super Robot Taisen where the player must manage engagements of Matched. Finally in King Off Fighters: Maximum Impact 2, fighting it Leona Heidern can fight with the costumes of Asuka or Rei.
Terms suitable for Evangelion
- Adam : First Angel, arrived on Earth there is billion years, but discovered by the human ones in the year 2000 with the South pole, in an underground cavity called “the white Moon”. Adam is in fact an entity more female than male, and it is the “mother” of the race of the Angels (except Lilith which is its equal). It is this Angel, when it was awaked by the human experiments undertaken by the team of Doctor Katsuragi in 2000, who because the Second Impact.
- Angels (shito) : The name " Ange" is the official translation wanted by Hideaki Anno (several texts in the series show the word " Angel"), nevertheless the term employed in Japanese is shito (“messenger”, or “apostle”). They are the offspring of Adam, and their DNA corresponds to 99,89% with that of the human beings. They can take multiple forms, giant creature with the computer virus, while passing by a human appearance. Their motivations are unknown, nevertheless their target is systematically Géofront, and more precisely the Dogma terminal.
- At-Field : or Absolute Terror Field. Initially presented like a simple shield protecting Evangelions and the Angels against any human attack, At-Field finds at the time of the outcome of the series a more complex definition. It is indeed explained that any thing, not only Eva and the Angels, has an At-Field: it is to some extent about natural defense that the living beings set up between them and the world (mentally speaking). But while thus protecting itself from the proximity of the other in what it has of potentially painful (feelings, relations…), the man is constrained with loneliness and the confrontation. This term is one of the keys allowing the comprehension of the basic speech of Evangelion. It offers to the combat Eva/Anges a new lighting, and is to be put in parallel with the Dilemma of the Hedgehog that Misato evokes while speaking about the problems of Shinji in its relation in the world and the others.
- Berserker : moment when Evangelion enters an insane rage and become unverifiable ( Berserk means “mad” in English). Eva-01 is that which has more tendency to furious madness. Berserks are pulled by an imminent danger (Eva-01), or when the heart of Eva revolts against its external environment (Eva-00).
- umbilical Cable : cable connecting Evangelion to an energy source. Evangelions have a reserve of very limited energy (5 minutes in normal mode; 1 minute with full power; approximately 16 hours in day before). Evangelion in Berserk does not have any more energy requirement, it is supplied car.
- Children : appoint a child-pilot of Evangelion. They are some 14 year old teenagers, which lost all their mother. The series will reveal that each pilot was assigned in Eva because the hearts of their respective mothers are locked up in Eva. NB: in the Japanese original version, the English word children (plural of child , “child”) is used to appoint at the same time the pilots all together, and each individual pilot. It is a grammatical error which is explained by the fact why Japanese very seldom employs plural in their language, and they control this concept badly when they use foreign words. In the english language version of the series, the translators chose to employ the term child , with each time the Japanese term children is used to appoint only one pilot.
- mental Contamination : Process in which an Angel tries to infiltrate the mental one of a pilot of Evangelion. It is the means which the Angels use to communicate. All the angels are not able to attack an human being thus, but all can at least use that to communicate.
- Core : single vulnerable point of an Angel. It is said that it is about the seat of the heart. Evas have also Core but one can configure it according to the pilot.
- Dummy System : System simulating a cerebral heart and waves, which allows the use of Eva without pilot. The system makes accept Eva that there is a pilot inside: the system makes possible activation but its sphere of activity is limited. There exist two systems, one developed by Nerv and simulating the heart of Rei Ayanami, the other developed by Seele simulating the heart of Kaworu Nagisa.
- Entry Plug : metal capsule introduced at the base of the nape of the neck of Eva, and being used as cockpit to the pilot.
- Evangelion (Eva) : Name of human of synthesis created thanks to genetic research of the SEELE and of their laboratory, Gehirn (dismantled and reformed under the name of " Nerv"). They are in fact of the modified clones of Adam, the first Angel, whose body was found in the year 2000 with the South pole. They are wrapped of a protective armor. The leaders of the organization regard them as weapons, but also fear that they wake up as new Adams.
- Gehirn : organization which was in charge of the first projects on Evas, then replaced by the " Nerv". It should be noted that " Gehirn" mean " cerveau" in German, while " Nerv" mean " nerf" and " Seele" , " âme".
- Geofront : n.m. Discovered in 2003, under the town of Hakone and on which Tokyo-3 rests, this spherical cavity of a diameter of 13,75 km is filled with 80 % by ground. The general headquarter was built in the center of a space 6 km in diameter, in the upper part the geoid. Géofront is connected to surface thanks to a magnetic monorail and a " because-train".
- (First) Impact : collision of an asteroid on the Earth there is 4 billion years. The birth of the Moon, formed starting from remains of the Earth was followed from there generated by the impact.
- (Second) Impact : catastrophe having taken place in the year 2000 and which failed to destroy humanity; officially due to the impact of an asteroid. Meet of Adam with human.
- (Third) Impact : catastrophe envisaged if an Angel arrived has to penetrate the Dogma Exchange. Meet of Adam with an Angel
- Lance of Longinus : Name sometimes given to the lance used by a Roman legionary to make sure of dead of Jesus-Christ. If the series does not give a clear explanation as for its origin, the lance has nevertheless an major importance there since it is it which retains captive Lilith, it is thus a “tueuse” weapon gods. It contains a gigantic power since it manages to destroy the Arael angel of only one blow, before being put into orbit around the moon. Gendo and Fuyutsuki treat it like a burden and await only the occasion to get rid some. At the oddment it is always planted in the moon. A very particular importance nevertheless is conferred to him at the time of last film, The End off Evangelion , she is suddenly pointed out the Moon, and takes part in the advent of Lilith.
-
LCL : liquid of yellow/orange color, with the odor of blood, in which the pilots of Evangelion bathe. This liquid reinforces the mental bond between Evangelion and its pilot, and can slightly protect the pilot from the physical and mental attacks. It is revealed in the series that it is acted in fact of blood of Lilith. Significance of the acronym " LCL" is unknown, the various official guides published by the Gainax studio having refuted the explanations such as Link Connecting Liquid , for example. It is possible that it is about Lilith corpse Liquid .
-
Lilith : second Angel arrived shortly after Adam, and mother of mankind. She was discovered in an underground cavity called " The moon noire" , which was used thereafter as foundation at the HQ of Nerv, Geofront. Lilith is retained in the Terminal Dogma, the most underground, made safe and confidential section, of Geofront. It there is crucifiée, and transpierced Lance of Longinus. It has a strange mask which is the emblem of Seele.
- MAGI system : Supercomputer consisted three computers of 7th generation: Nickel silver, Casper and Balthasar (3 Magi, names and titles given by the tradition to nominate the persons come to adore Jesus in its crib in the Bible) from where the name " MAGI". MAGI was brought into service by Doctor Akagi Naoko (the mother of Ritsuko) in 2010. It consists of 3 human brains where a personality was transferred. Each brain contains a facet of the personality of its creative Naoko: the woman, the scientific mother, and it.
- Dead Sea Scroll : the series refers to these writings discovered by a shepherd with the accesses of the Dead Sea, it acted of a priceless collection of parchments which treat religion before the arrival of Christ. In the series, these manuscripts, in possession of Seele enormously contain information on the human history, and apparently, some indications of the future.
- NERV : organization of which the official goal is to defend the human race against the Angels. Its slogan is God' S in his heaven, ale S right with the world , worms of the famous English poet Robert Browning (husband of the poetess Elizabeth Browning).
- of Complementarity of the Man : the details of the Plan of Complementarity remain ambiguous so much the real interests of the various protagonists of the project (in particular Gendo) differ. Nevertheless its final objective as seen by Seele is to cause a third Impact which will result in to cancel any life on Earth and definitively to link the hearts of the men in only one entity, divine and immortal. This Plan leaves the principle which humanity turns in round, cannot evolve/move any more, too scattered that it is because of the separation of At-Fields.
- Plug Follows : combination used by the “Childrens” in Entry plug. There are several types. In theory, it eliminates the external influences in the relation controls/Eva. However, one can ask for the range of his effectiveness, Shinji controlling Eva twice without carrying some.
- Progressive Knife : A weapon of close combat which slices Net, and this on a molecular level by using a blade made of high frequency particles vibrating. One of the standard armaments of Evas, and generally arranged in the module of the shoulder. Eva-02 makes use of a new knife of the cutter type: even if the blade breaks, it can be lengthened for a fast replacement. It is often indicated by the abbreviation " Prog Knife" or " PK".
- Project E : project at the origin of the creation of Evangelions. Directed by the mother of Shinji and Naoko Akagi, then by Ritsuko Akagi.
- Report/ratio Marduk : program selection of the pilots of Evangelion. It is a factitious organization, behind which Nerv is hiding place.
- Synchronization : synchronization measures the rate with which the pilot arrives at being in osmosis with Evangelion, or more precisely with the spirit being inside this one. In the majority of the cases the spirit being in Evangelion proves to be the mother of the pilot. Indeed, at the base Evangelion is only one empty shell. The more synchronization is raised, the more the pilot will be able to make react Evangelion effectively. The most traditional rates are: 60%, it is the minimum rate necessary to control Eva; 100%, the optimum rate to control Eva; 400%, this rate of synchro involve the absorption of the pilot in Eva. If it is possible to exceed the 100%, it is because this rate has only one theoretical value practices to establish the intensity of the contact between Eva and its pilot.
- Seele : German heart. Seele is the organization which finances and directs the Plan of Complementarity of the Man through Gendo and the NERV. It is represented by a group called the Committee and whose chief is Keel Lorentz.
