Eustatism

The eustatism is a variation of the mean level of the seas due to the change compared to the presumedly stable Continent S.

It is a phenomenon of rise and cyclic descents of water, which follows a variable rate/rhythm (about the mm/an). The causes are the cast iron of the ices (gone up level) or the Glaciation S (drops), or of the variations of the level of the continents.

Thus two eustatisms can be distinguished:

  • a eustatism diastrophic related to modifications in the form and the depth of the Ocean S (tectono-eustatism)

  • a glacial eustatism resulting from the variations of the Ice cap (glacio-eustatism)
