Europeana

Europeana is a prototype of Bibliothèque on line developed by the National library of France (BnF), within the framework of the project of European Numeric library.

Europeana gathers (for its opening) approximately: 12000 free documents of rights, in image mode and text mode (obtained by OCR) resulting from the collections of BnF (: 7000), of the National library Széchényi of Hungary and of the National library of the Portugal.

Begun at the summer 2006 in order to submit it to its european partners, Europeana was put on line on March 22nd, 2007, at the time of the Salon of the book of Paris.

Europeana is rather close to Gallica, but profits from a more modern Graphical interface and from a Indexation full text more advanced.

The question of the Royalty is one of the great difficulties of this type of project.

At the beginning of 2007, the project is very far from being succeeded and it is competed with by the projects of American companies like Google Recherche of books or Microsoft.
