European shield
The Bouclier European was a competition of Rugby to XV organized between 2002 and 2005. The Bouclier European was in the facts a competition of fishing out for the clubs eliminated with the first turn of the Challenge European. At the time of its last edition, it includes certain clubs not having taken part in the Challenge European like Madrid, Bucharest or Bera Bera.
This competition was born with the change of formula of the Challenge European at the time of the season 2002-03. The Challenge then passed from a formula by hen to a formula to direct elimination. The Bouclier was thus created so that the teams eliminated as of the first turn can continue their European adventure. However a news reforms Challenge European in 2005-06, reintroduced the system by hen then elimination with only 20 teams instead of 32, which involved the disappearance of the Shield.
The name Bouclier European was the name of origin of the Challenge European , but at the time of the reforms of the cuts in 2002-03, it became Challenge European, while keeping the same mode of selection and the statute of “second” cut of Europe. This reforms generated a new Cut which took again the name of Bouclier European , even if it did not have strictly anything to see with the back issues. Therefore the editions of the Bouclier European (old) are with the prize list of the Challenge European which is the obvious result of the competition.
