European company of optics

The European Société of optics is a learned society with European vocation dedicated to optics. Its English name is European Optical Society shortened EOS. It is more known than the French term even if official name were indeed deposited in French language.

Its goal is to contribute to the advance of optics and related sciences and to promote their applications at the European and international level by supporting the bringing together and the collaboration of all the people concerned with industrial optics and its repercussions.

The company has the legal status of a French association governed by the law of July 1st, 1901. It has its official seat with the Institut of optics theoretical and applied.

History

Before 1984, optics was represented in Europe by the European Committee of optics. This one joined the European Company of physics in May 1984 to become its optical division there. In 1986, the national optical companies of various countries of Europe founded Europtica, the European Federation of the companies and national committees of optics, officially declared in Paris in 1987. The two entities decided to jointly organize a European conference of optics

The European Company of optics was founded on March 12th, 1991 with $the Hague at the time of the fourth European conference of optics. This foundation results from the fusion of Europtica and optical division from the European Société of physics. The founding members were 22 people of 13 European countries and 14 national companies, of which the French company of optics. It currently counts 795 members including 16 national companies.
