European Day of the data protection

The European day of the data protection in personal matter is an initiative of the the Council of Europe relayed by the European commission which solemnly proclaimed the January 28th of each year like day of data protection.

This day took place for the first time the January 28th 2007.

Its goal is to sensitize the European citizens on the importance of the protection of their personal data and the respect of their freedoms and basic rights, in particular of their private life. In the daily life, many personal informations are recorded in files, to communicate to thirds, to bring closer with other data or have various uses, effect multiplied by the appearance of new technologies and nomads.

This day will be relayed in each country by the authorities or organizations dedicated to the private life or data protection.

This initiative falls under the continuity of the Convention for the protection of the people with regard to the data processing automated in personal matter, opened with the signature on January 28th, 1981. This convention became the international legal instrument of reference and inspired the directives adopted thereafter by the European Union on October 24th, 1995 on the protection of the personal data and freedom of movement and the July 12th 2002 on the private life and electronic communications.

38 countries adhered to date (January 2007) to this Convention of Strasbourg, drawn up within the framework of the Council of Europe on the bases of article 8 of the European Convention of safeguard of the human rights and fundamental freedoms, (Rome, November 4th 1950).
