The European convention for the protection of the pets is a international Convention signed by the Member States of the the Council of Europe the November 13rd 1987 with Strasbourg and aiming at improving protection due to the pets.

It envisages 16 years a minimum age to be able to acquire a pet.
This convention, which falls under a general movement in favor of the Protection of the animals, was established in two versions, English and French, also being taken. It is coming into effect on May 1st 1992 after at least four ratifications (Germany, Belgium, Greece, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden).
To date 18 States ratified it, of which Belgium on December 20th, 1991, Switzerland, on November 3rd, 1993 and France on October 3rd, 2003.
