Eurolinguistique

The eurolinguistic is a discipline rather recent Linguistique. It deals with languages of Europe in all its aspects: history, sociology, the policy and systems of the languages as well as the intercultural communication.

The word Europe is not used unanimously. There are three definitions:

  • the political definition (= languages of the European Union) (this definition is often used in the books dedicated to the linguistic policy, e.g. Ahrens 2003)
  • the geographical definition (= languages of the Atlantique to the the Ural)
  • the cultural-anthropological definition (= languages of the nations characterized of a Greek and Latin heritage, the variable Westerner of the Christian religion (and its developments with the Réforme and the Counter-Reformation), the use of the Latin alphabet, the separation of the capacities ecclesiastical and laic, a common history of arts and education system - it is definition which is, p.ex., used by Samuel Huntington (1996: 45ss.) and Helmut Schmidt (2000: 207ss.))

The term eurolinguistic was created by Norbert Reiter in 1991 (German Eurolinguistik ), but there were eurolinguistic studies also before this date, p.ex. work of Lewy (1964), Décsy (1973) and Haarmann (1975). A bibliography of the eurolinguistic publications can be found on Internet site EuroLinguistiX , published by Joachim Grzega. Two collections of the linguistic, important dates for eurolinguistic research, are the Atlas Linguarum Europae and the World Atlas off Linguistic Structures (Haspelmath and Al 2005). In 2006, Joachim Grzega published a basic book which presents the common features of the European languages.
