Eurocity

The concept of international trains EuroCity (abbreviation: EC.) was launched in 1987 by the railroad companies of the European Community and of Suisse and Austria. It aimed at replacing the trains TEE. With the difference of the TEE, the EuroCity trains also comprise cars of second class.

Conditions of certification

The international trains having the EuroCity label fill a certain number of criteria:
  • their route must cross at least a border;

  • they must have cars air-conditioned in first and second class;
  • they should stop only in the important cities;
  • their stops in station must be 5 minutes to the maximum, exceptionally 15 minutes for technical reasons;
  • controls of customs must take place on train, and this one should only stop briefly also in the frontier stations;
  • of the meals and drinks must be available on board (if possible, restaurant car);
  • the personnel of accompaniment must at least have knowledge of two languages, of which at least French, English or German;
  • a mean velocity of at least 90 km/h;
  • punctuality (of the trains which is too often late can lose their EuroCity label).

Some examples of EuroCity trains

  • EuroCity 63 : Munich - Salzburg-Linz-Vienna Hegyeshalom - Györ - Budapest; in the other direction, this EuroCity has number 62.

  • EuroCity Montrverdi 39: (Geneva - Lausanne - Sion -)/(Basle CF - Bern -) Aspires to - Domodossola - Milano C.le - Brescia - Verona P.N. - Venezia S.L. ; in the other direction, this EuroCity had number 40.

EuroCity 55" Gustave Eiffel" Paris manages is in Frankfurt, in the other direction, this EC. had number 54
